Subject: Samaritan's Purse Volunteers Needed in Georgia and Alaska
Good afternoon everyone!! We have two locations that really need volunteers. Please prayerfully consider these opportunities and let us know ASAP if you would be willing to serve in either Georgia or Alaska. Thanks!!!
OPPORTUNITY #
1.........Samaritan's Purse teams are in Bibb County, Georgia responding to the recent tornado
damage. We need volunteers!!! Based on the 400+ work
orders received, there is a lot of tree work to be done. Therefore,
what we need on this particular response is volunteers with skill in using a
chainsaw. The Lord has opened doors for us and we were able to
secure housing at a church in Macon so we will again be able to provide meals
and housing for our volunteers. We are currently scheduling through June
7, but we may extend through June 14.
If you would like to serve with us in GA and can mobilize quickly, please let
us know ASAP. You will need to submit a Volunteer Questionnaire found on
our website. If you visit our website, there is a volunteer alert button
on the homepage. Just click on that button and it will lead you through
the process of completing and submitting the Volunteer Questionnaire for you
and/or your team. (Make sure you are not submitting the Volunteer Skills
Questionnaire for this opportunity.)

OPPORTUNITY # 2.............Unfortunately there have been some cancellations for the 2008 Alaska Project. Therefore, we thought we would open this opportunity up to all of those that have served with us so faithfully in the past. Listed below are the dates/weeks we have available and the number of openings we have.......
July 11 - 19........... 2 spaces
July 18 - 26........... 1 space
August 22 - 30..............4 spaces
As a reminder, here is a write up on the work going on this summer............
Samaritan's Purse will be heading back to Alaska in 2008 and we need skilled construction volunteers to serve alongside us. This year we will not be working in Hooper Bay, but will be working in the interior of Alaska at Kokrine Hills Bible Camp. If you served with us in Hooper Bay, please remember that this is a new project and housing, etc. will be different than what you experienced there.
Kokrine Hills Bible Camp is a ministry of the non-profit Alaska native organization, Koyukon Camp Ministries, Inc. The camp is located about 350 miles north of Anchorage and 225 miles west of Fairbanks on the Yukon River. The only way to get to the camp is by boat or floatplane. The camp is rustic. There are no cell phones, only generator power, no tv, no roads, stores, or newspapers. The camp has cabins that all of our volunteers and staff will sleep in. Mattresses will be provided, but volunteers will need to provide their own sleeping bag and pillow. Showers will be available, but everyone uses outhouses since there are no flushing toilets.
The proposed project that Samaritan's Purse will be working on is the 28' x 60' addition to the kitchen/dining hall. Volunteers will start arriving on July 12, 2008 and our goal is to have this completed by the 1st of September. To accomplish this, we must have volunteers with strong construction skills. During this project, our volunteers will not be working/interacting very much with the locals, as they were in Hooper Bay. Unfortunately, during the time we are working at the camp, there will not be a kids camp in progress. If time permits, you may want to wet a line in the mighty Yukon and see if you can snag some Northern Pike and Sheefish. You would need to purchase your Alaska Fishing License online before your trip. You may be asked to help with other projects at the Bible Camp while you are there. Therefore, we ask that you please remain flexible.
For more information on the camp itself, please visit their website at www.kokrinehills.org.
Each volunteer is responsible for getting to Kenai on Friday, and then Samaritan's Purse will provide housing in Kenai on Friday night. Saturday morning Samaritan's Purse will fly each volunteer to Tanana where they will then take a two-hour boat ride (65 miles) up the Yukon River on to the camp. When it is time for a team to depart Kokrine Hills, a boat will pick up the volunteers at the camp and take them back to Tanana where they will catch a Samaritan's Purse flight to Kenai. Samaritan's Purse will have volunteers back in Kenai in time to catch a flight home on Saturday night.
If you or your church are interested in this exciting opportunity, please have each team member complete and submit a Volunteer Skills Questionnaire which can be found on our website..... www.samaritanspurse.org under Volunteer Opportunities. Please remember that on this particular project, we really only need volunteers with very strong construction skills. Once your skills have been reviewed and approved, we will notify you and ask that you visit a Volunteer Questionnaire/Application. Once your Questionnaire has been received and reviewed, we will contact you to discuss possibilities.
(Please note: Not all of the skills on that questionnaire pertain to the Kokrine Hills project, but we do need this information for our database.)
Thank you!!
Please give us a call if you have any questions or have any leads for us. Thanks!!!
