Subject: Update on 2008 Alaska Project
Greetings from Boone, NC !!!! As you know, we are currently scheduling volunteers for our 2008 Alaska project. We have had several volunteers sign up, but we still have some openings in July and August if you are interested.
We also have two specific needs that I wanted to bring to your attention........
COOKS - WE NEED EXPERIENCED COOKS !!!!!!! If you are looking for an opportunity to serve that is a little out of the norm, then this opportunity just might be for you. We are looking for experienced cooks that can prepare meals for approximately 60 volunteers and staff during the Kokrine Hills Project. Our goal would be to have 2 cooks that can stay the whole time.....July 11 - August 30. However, we are also open to having 4 cooks split the time.....2 would be there from July 11 - August 9 and 2 would be there from August 8 - August 30. Remember, the project we will be working on is the dining/kitchen facility so please keep in mind that the current conditions are somewhat primitive at the camp.... outdated kitchen, 8 burner propane stove, generator power in the kitchen, refrigeration is the creek, etc. We will be responsible for placing the food order based on the proposed menu and will have supplies delivered as best we can by boat. The essential kitchen items will be barged up prior to the volunteer's arrival in July. If you would like to help us with our cooking needs, please complete the skills sheet below and when you return it to me, please make sure that I know you are interested in the "Cook Position".
FRAMERS - As of right now, we need 5 skilled Framers to go with us to the Kokrine Hills Bible Camp. Ideally, we need framers that can go from May 31st - June 18th. If you would like to serve alongside us in this way, please submit the skill sheet below and when you return it to me, please make sure that I know you are interested in the "Framing Portion" of the project.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!!
Nicole

GREAT NEWS!!!
Samaritan's Purse will be heading back to Alaska in 2008 and we need skilled construction volunteers to serve alongside us. This year we will not be working in Hooper Bay, but will be working in the interior of Alaska at Kokrine Hills Bible Camp. If you served with us in Hooper Bay, please remember that this is a new project and housing, etc. will be different than what you experienced there.
Kokrine Hills Bible Camp is a ministry of the non-profit Alaska native organization, Koyukon Camp Ministries, Inc. The camp is located about 350 miles north of Anchorage and 225 miles west of Fairbanks on the Yukon River. The only way to get to the camp is by boat or floatplane. The camp is rustic. There are no cell phones, only generator power, no tv, no roads, stores, or newspapers. The camp has cabins that all of our volunteers and staff will sleep in. Mattresses will be provided, but volunteers will need to provide their own sleeping bag and pillow. Showers will be available, but everyone uses outhouses since there are no flushing toilets.
The proposed project that Samaritan's Purse will be working on is the 28' x 60' addition to the kitchen/dining hall. Volunteers will start arriving on July 12, 2008 and our goal is to have this completed by the 1st of September. To accomplish this, we must have volunteers with strong construction skills. During this project, our volunteers will not be working/interacting very much with the locals, as they were in Hooper Bay. Unfortunately, during the time we are working at the camp, there will not be a kids camp in progress. If time permits, you may want to wet a line in the mighty Yukon and see if you can snag some Northern Pike and Sheefish. You would need to purchase your Alaska Fishing License online before your trip. You may be asked to help with other projects at the Bible Camp while you are there. Therefore, we ask that you please remain flexible.
For more information on the camp itself, please visit their website at www.kokrinehills.org.
Each volunteer is responsible for getting to Kenai on Friday, and then Samaritan's Purse will provide housing in Kenai on Friday night. Saturday morning Samaritan's Purse will fly each volunteer to Tanana where they will then take a two-hour boat ride (65 miles) up the Yukon River on to the camp. Due to the logistics involved and our narrow window of opportunity on this particular project, we do ask that volunteers try and stay for a minimum of two weeks. When it is time for a team to depart Kokrine Hills, a boat will pick up the volunteers at the camp and take them back to Tanana where they will catch a Samaritan's Purse flight to Kenai. Samaritan's Purse will have you back in Kenai in time to catch a late flight home on Saturday night if you would prefer. Teams will then be responsible for getting their flights home from Kenai on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
If you or your church are interested in this exciting opportunity, please have each team member complete and submit the Skills Worksheet below. Please remember that on this particular project, we really only need volunteers with very strong construction skills. Once your skills have been reviewed and approved, we will notify you and ask that you visit our website at www.samaritanspurse.org and complete the Volunteer Questionnaire located in the Volunteer Opportunities section. Once your Questionnaire has been received and reviewed, we will contact you to discuss possibilities.
(Please note: Not all of the skills below pertain to the Kokrine Hills project, but we do need this information for our database.)
Thank you!!
