Gospel Mk 1:40-45

How did the leper come close to Jesus when the lepers are commanded to shout "unclean unclean" and keep their distance from the community. Some people speculate that he hid himself so he can go unnoticed and be able to approach Jesus. Who the communities treated as unclean approached Jesus.

Even if no one would accept us, God will always be willing to embrace us. The leper, humbled himself and didn't blame God for his suffering but rather accepted it. Is he asking the Lord to heal him or is he opening himself to the desire of God that he may be healed. To pray to God is to open ourselves to his will which is, primarily, to unite himself to us and free us from sin which brought death and suffering to mankind. We should always seek first the kingdom of God and everything else will follow. As St. Paul had said, everything works for the one who loves the Lord.

The leper trusted that God can do anything that he wills. We ask the Lord to forgive us of our sins. His mercy not only erases our sins but also transforms us. We have to show ourselves to the Father as the prodigal son did so that by his love, we can be brought back to life.

God was moved by pity seeing man affected by sin and even touched the one they consider as unclean. An unclean person is not cleansed just by leaving him alone but by accommodating them to Jesus which mean to let Jesus touch them and approach them. We have to believe that we are cleansed and made holy by the touch of Jesus.

Jesus moved with compassion touched the man. The Lord wants to embrace us and touch us. He is always there in the sacraments so he can meet us, talk to us and in the Eucharist, be able to touch us. Jesus wants to let us know that he is always waiting for us like the Father in the parable of the prodigal son. When we pray, it the reality is we are not to change God's mind to be merciful to us. In prayer, we respond to his constant offer to love us and to bless us.

Jesus shows the importance of the priestly authority to incorporate us back into the Church. The healing took place when the law of Moses was still effective so Jesus ask the man to follow the law. The rites in the law of Moses point to what Christ will fulfill that includes the sacraments. This also tells us that we have to be freed from sin so we can be united to the Church, the body of Christ.  The healing of our souls is a greater healing than the healing of the body.

We should be very happy and let other people know the healing that Jesus does when we encounter him in the sacraments. The people were so eager to approach Jesus for physical healing but they don't keep the same enthusiasm for  spiritual healing.

Formerly, the leper was distancing himself from the people and now there is a role reversal, the leper is once again incorporated into the community in exchange for the inability of Jesus to enter openly. The people cannot see Jesus when they don't have the right perception of his identity and mission. The leper was instructed by Jesus to tell no one that he got healed but the man didn't listen. It's not that Jesus didn't want the Gospel to reach more people, but the people envisioned a different kind of messiah. As a result, many people approached Jesus for the wrong reason to the point that Jesus had to distance himself from them. He wanted the people to understand who Jesus really is.

Reading 1 Jas 1:1-11
Responsorial Psalm Ps 119:67, 68, 71, 72, 75, 76
Gospel Mk 8:11-13
