Gospel Jn 2:13-25

Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

(John, in his Gospel, connected the Passion to the passover because this feast points to Jesus' Last Supper and death on the Cross. This everlasting sacrifice of Jesus is made present in the Mass. The  Passover and the offering of the sacrifices in the temple pointed to the Mass. The feast days of the Jews pointed to Christ and what he will bring into perfection.)

He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,
as well as the money changers seated there.
(Jesus saw the people desecrating the temple by making it into a marketplace. This was the same place where Mary and Joseph found Jesus and where he said that he should be in his Father's house.

St. Augustine pointed out that in the Old Covenant, the people were offering dead animals as sacrifices. In the New Covenant, we offer living sacrifices by offering ourselves to the Lord.

The temple can also symbolize us. Are we abusing ourselves treating it in ways that shouldn't be doing. Do we treat others as objects or machines. Do we let ourselves be enslaved by too much work, passions, vanity, or lust? Do we nourish it and keep it healthy?)

He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money changers
and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
"Take these out of here,
and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
(The temple is a consecrated place dedicated for worship of God and it shouldn't be used for any other purpose.

The glory of God is the living man, but the life of man is the vision of God' reminded us St. Irenaeus,

The place of worship is holy. It is where the people of the Lord gather together to worship him. Do we focus our attention to the Lord or do we let our worldly cares distract us?

We are temples of the Holy Spirit. Such is the dignity of man that God has shared His divine life with us and make his dwelling in us. Also, as temples, we are able to do our offerings to the Lord . We have  been purchased and purified by the blood of the Lamb and because of this, we are made holy. We should give our personal adherence to God to whom we should love with all our hearts and with all our soul. We cannot have any other gods.)

His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
(Jesus said that his food is to do the will of the Father. He is the great Amen who always gives his Yes to God.)

At this the Jews answered and said to him,
"What sign can you show us for doing this?"
Jesus answered and said to them,
"Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said,
"This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
and you will raise it up in three days?"
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they came to believe the Scripture
and the word Jesus had spoken.
( The temple was destructed in the about the year 70 AD, as prophesied by Jesus. The temple was the only place where they were able to offer sacrifices. When the temple was destructed, it symbolized the ending of the rituals of  Old Covenant because there is  no temple that they can continue their offering of the Jewish Sacrifice according to the Mosaic  Law. Also, the records for the Levitical lineage (priesly family who can offer sacrifices)also were lost. But the Old Covenant was fulfilled by a much more powerful sacrifice, the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross which is made present everytime we go to Mass.)

While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
many began to believe in his name
when they saw the signs he was doing.
But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all,
and did not need anyone to testify about human nature.
He himself understood it well.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 42:2, 3; 43:3, 4
Gospel Lk 4:24-30

Reading 1 Dn 3:25, 34-43
Responsorial Psalm Ps 25:4-5ab, 6 and 7bc, 8-9
Gospel Mt 18:21-35
