March 25 marks ‘Day of the Unborn’ in PH, other nations
MANILA, March 14, 2012—As the Philippines marks the “Day of the Unborn” on March 25 along with several other nations, everyone is enjoined to celebrate the day dedicated to unborn children with activities that will communicate pro-life messages and promote the dignity and protection of unborn children.
“It is a day when all people of goodwill should rededicate themselves to advocating that societies around the world include every unborn child in the human community. It is a day for people of faith to pray for the eradication of abortion from the planet,” Pro-Life Philippines stated in an invitation to all to mark the special day.
Suggested activities for the day are candle-lighting activities for the unborn; prayer meetings to spread the message of life and love; poster-designing contests revolving around the pro-life theme; seminars and exhibits related to pro-life issues; printing and distribution of leaflets and other information materials to encourage awareness of culture of life issues; and rallies or small public meetings to propagate the pro-life message.
March 25, which is also the Feast of the Annunciation on the Catholic calendar, was declared the “Day of the Unborn” in the Philippines by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through of Proclamation No. 586 issued in 2004.
This year, however, the Feast of the Annunciation is on March 26 since March 25 falls on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. The Annunciation refers to an important event in the history of salvation, in which the Blessed Mother is told by the angel Gabriel of her being highly favored and being chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus Christ.
‘Day of the Unborn’ overseas
Several other countries had already been celebrating March 25 as a day dedicated to unborn children ahead of the Philippines: El Salvador was the first to decree the observance of the special day, in 1993. It was called “Day of the Right to Be Born” and was proclaimed by the Legislative Assembly, thanks to the efforts of pro-life groups.
In Argentina, the “Day of the Unborn” was officially proclaimed in 1998. Then 1999 saw the “Day of the Conceived and Unborn” declared in Chile, and the “National Day of the Unborn” in Guatemala. From 2000 to the next few years, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Peru, Paraguay and the Philippines were among the nations whose governments declared March 25 as a day dedicated to the celebration of the life of unborn children.
In 2011 the “Day of the Unborn” was observed in Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Panama, Peru, Slovakia, Cuba, Austria, Philippines, and Romania. Though it continues to be closely tied in with the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25 is now not only a Christian celebration, but also a celebration for all those who believe that every human being has the right to life.
