Mk 9:2-10

How blessed these three disciples are, taken by Jesus to the mountain to see the transfiguration. We also have the opportunity to witness the glory of God when we look at the Eucharist with the eyes of faith and know that what we are looking at is Jesus, his soul, body and divinity. Even if we cannot see it with our senses, the resurrected Jesus is with us.

The apostles saw a peek of the glory of Jesus. After hearing what Jesus, the Son of Man will have to undergo, Jesus strengthens their faith by a great sign. Events, people, miracles in the Old Testament point to what Christ will be fulfilling. The manna was given in the Old, Jesus gave the true bread of life. If Moses saved the people when he led them to cross the Red Sea, we are saved by Christ through the waters of Baptism. If the water was turned into blood by Moses, Jesus turned the wine into his own blood. These are things that prepare our eyes of faith for everything that Jesus did in the New Testament. In the transfiguration, Jesus gave them a glimpse of what they weren't seeing. The prophets appeared to them too so that the apostles can witness the prophets. Elijah represents the prophets and Moses stands for the law . All the law and the prophets point to Jesus, the word of God through whom everything about God is said. Jesus reveals to us the absolute perfection of God and his love for us.

Archbishop Dolan of New York said that Peter was grateful for being able to witness the glory of God. We have to also realize the value of just 'being' and not just the 'acting' as  God himself told us ,"be still and know that I am God". Archbishop Dolan said that our society has put a big emphasis on doing and forgot the importance of being still. One saint who always prays in front of the Blessed was once asked what he says when he prays. He said "nothing" for he is satisfied just being in the holy presence of God. Are we thankful to be in the presence of the Eucharist, the real presence of Jesus, body, blood, soul and divinity?

The bible tells us that Peter didn't know what to say because he got so carried away by what he saw. But this was not said of Peter's confession when Jesus talked about eating of flesh and blood that implies that he really means what he said; when Jesus said to eat his flesh and drink his blood, Peter understood what Christ said in the literal sense.

In the gospel reading we had last Wednesday, the people were asking for a sign from Jesus to reveal who he truly is because the people failed to see that there is something that is greater than Solomon in their midst. The ways of God is not our way and we should have the mind of Christ and not look for worldly glory

St. Jerome said that the cloud that overshadowed them is the grace of the Holy Spirit. We can remember that the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descended from the heavens when Jesus was baptized by John, and then God the Father spoke about Jesus. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus is revealed to us and Jesus reveals who the Father is.

Even when Jesus was always with the disciples, they still didn't have full understanding of what Jesus told them. To know the faith is a lifelong process. We can never exhaust the meaning of the word of God although we can continuously deepen our understanding of the word. It always speaks to us and it is always new.

Reading 1 Dn 9:4b-10
Responsorial Psalm Ps 79:8, 9, 11 and 13
Gospel Lk 6:36-38

Reading 1 Is 1:10, 16-20
Responsorial Psalm Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21 and 23
Gospel Mt 23:1-12

Reading 1 Jer 17:5-10
Responsorial Psalm Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6
Gospel Lk 16:19-31
