Hi Everyone!

For those that don't know Con of the North is a pretty popular
convention that takes place every February in the Cities. This year
it is being held February 5-7 and you can find out more here:
http://www.conofthenorth.org/

The reason I bring this up is that we have chatted about going at a
couple of game nights and Jonathan and I have pre-registered for the
Con and will be going up. Jonathan is bringing his family so his wife
and the girls can go shopping while he plays games. I'm looking for a
couple of people to share a room with onsite to split costs for two
nights in a hotel room. Greg and Bill were considering it... but as
the $25 pre-registration deadline is January 2nd I thought I would
toss the idea out to everyone.

Let me know who's interested and what other information you might need
and we'll see about a road trip for the DoublePlay game club!

The good thing about a 2 week rotation schedule is I can map out when I'm working years in advance, the bad thing about the 2 week rotation schedule is that I'm working the 5th-7th and I'll try to get off but i'm unsure how much vacation I'll have after the holidays.

Give me a heads up when you find out.  If you go I’m sure I’ll probably go.

It looks like preregistration is over online... but I got a postcard
in the mail yesterday that says pre-reg is open until the 9th... So if
anyone is still interested you could try emailing the Con folks to pre-
register.

I'm also planning to reserve a room really soon. I'm tempted to just
reserve for 4 adults, but since its probably cheaper the less its
reserved for a headcount is probably worthwhile. I'll be driving up
and Bill was planning to hitch a ride (still the case I hope!).
Jeremy, I know you were interested but I haven't heard from you in a
while and Greg is waiting to update his work schedule... Any updates
guys or should I just reserve for 4 and hope for the best? :-)

I've brought it up several times with Jen, but nothing really gets decided. She works tonight, but I'll talk to her tomorrow and attempt to nail something down one way or another.

Zack,

It won't be any more expensive reserving the room for 4 people than for 1 person.  Also for some reason the online price at the hotel is cheaper than the con's block rate.  Not that I get to use a cheap room.

Thanks for the heads up Jonathan! I know different hotels handle that
sort of thing differently. I'll go reserve a room the next time Hazel
gives me some along computer time.

"compromise" you come up with :-p

"If the vikings are in the superbowl i will be watching them."

So... You're saying that you don't have any conflicts that weekend. Right?

I was planning to come home in time to watch the Superbowl regardless
of the entrants... but I think that means we can still enjoy a morning
session of something before we head back to Mankato.

Our room is reserved for Friday and Saturday night! It was around
$160 if anyone wants to know the cost we're planning to split. I'm
starting to get excited for this... its less than a month away!

I've always been a procrastinator... I just registered for Con of the North.

It was decided that I could go if I lined up child care for the weekend since Jen has work. I just heard back from my sister-in-law early this afternoon, but then my cousin was around all day. I finally hopped on the site around 10pm, thinking I'd just sign up and pay quick, but I was (and still am) confused about whether or not I had to sign up for all my events right away. It looks like you can, but don't have to. Except that the main page states a deadline for game registration. So... I don't know. Just to be sure I went through the list and planned out my weekend. After doing that, I submitted at 11:57pm. Maybe they wouldn't be too picky since the site hasn't suddenly been updated to prevent registering anymore, but at least I definitely registered on the 9th.

The last convention I went to had a great system for selecting events. Once you were registered, you got a user name and password to login online. Then, you had access to the events list AND a little button to enter the event. It also showed how many other players were registered for each game with an option to register as an alternate in case someone dropped out of a full game. Plus, if  you changed your mind ahead of time, you could easily cancel a game from your personal event list and open up a spot for others before the day of.

Anyways, I'm registered. Also, I'm hoping to make it to DP this Tuesday.

I heard back from one of the Con Organizers. The registration desk
will open around 11:30 in the cities, so if we leave around 10 or so
we should be there right after the initial crowd dies down... So
Jeremy, let me know how your schedule works out... or if I'll just
have a sleeping Bill for company :-)

Also, Greg definitely can't make it up with us due to work. If anyone
else still has a serious Convention itch and wants to ride up and stay
for a couple days, let me know and we'll work it out (I think onsite
registration is $37). I still plan on being back for the Viking-less
Superbowl if that matters to anyone else :-)

Not sure when jeremy can leave or not.  i would be willing to wait if he can be ready a little after that.  That'll be up to you guys though.

Zack since you are driving did you want to pick me up at my place or do you want me to leave my car at your place?

I had a great time at the Con... and I think the others all did too!
We also all played a crap ton of games (8 AM to 2 AM Saturday for
me... pretty much without a break :-)

Here are some of my favorites from the Con for those who missed it...

Dungeon Lords - My two games of Dungeon Lords were incredibly fun. You
play the roll of an evil dungeon master building your dungeon and
fighting off adventurers. Its a mixture of euro style resource
management and effiiciency puzzles and the two hours it takes to play
just fly by.

Automobile - My suprise of the con. An economic game about building
and selling cars in the early days of automobiles. This went from a
game I was merely intersted in looking into to a game I must play
again soon. I'm anxiously awaiting the reprint!

Runewars - I had a chance to play a full game of this and had a great
time. A light (?) epic fantasy game in a coffin sized box :-) Plays in
half the time of Twilight Imperium and is twice as fun!

Homesteaders - Like Dungeon Lords, I brought this to the con and got
to play several times. Auction for the right to build different kinds
of buildings in a frontier town. Use the buildings to get resources,
trade and score points. A very pleasant way to spend an hour between
events!

Dvonn - Jonathan brought this little 2 player abstract and we played
it quite a bit to start out. It was a lot of fun an tough decisions
in about 15 minutes. I think I'll need to start looking into the GIPF
series even more now...

Revolution - Bravo Steven Jackson! This was plenty of fun and won't
stop being fun once a silly theme wears off (as there is no silly
theme to hide behind...)

Cosmic Encounter - Who gets up for 8 AM on Sunday of a Con? Me and 10
other guys for some Cosmic. I've played before... but never with the
older sets and aliens. The new to me powers were a blast in this
random, crazy galactic conquest game. I played well and got in
position to win... then made about three major blunders and pretty
much watched the end of the game unfold... but had great time anyway!

Oubliette - This was the first game I played. It was a game where
players try to navigate a shifting maze to be the first to leave. It
was a playtest session for a fairly new publisher and while the game
was fun it clearly unfinished. We hope our feedback can help make it
great!
