I'm getting some people sending me email instead of using this group

You need to declare a settings.xml server for the site deployment, e.g.

<server>
<id>github-site</id>
<username>git</username>
</server>

Use "git" for the username. The permissions are handled by the ssh key you use. In other words, *don't* use your git username.
