Cultural Studies Group of Nepal (CSGN) Monthly Lecture

This month we have great pleasure in welcoming Dr Mukta Lama, a professor of anthropology at Tribhuvan University, to talk on how the caste system functions in Nepal and its impact on today's society.

As I'm sure you all know, the Hindu caste system is based on the religious notion of purity and impurity, stratifying people into a hierarchy of different layers. Those at the top are considered pure, while those at the bottom are considered impure, untouchable and inauspiciousness. Each caste has a different set of practices related to daily life and as a consequence the castes have become segregated. Alongside caste comes higher or lower social status, with one's life chances often being determined by one's caste location. Despite being legally abolished in Nepal in 1962, caste still has a powerful influence on people's behaviour
in today's society, and can be seen to impact on social values such as equality and justice. Dr Lama will explain what caste is and discuss why it is important to reflect on caste and its transformation for the contemporary world in which we live.

We look forward to seeing you at the lecture!
