CSGN LECTURE ON FRIDAY 23 FEBRUARY
9:30-11:00 AM AT HOTEL SHANKER
This month we welcome Rabi Thapa, the renowned writer and well-known figure of the Nepal literary scene, to talk about his book Thamel: Dark Star of Kathmandu, which was published last year.
This book offers a fascinating insight into Thamel from a number of perspectives. We explore the founding myths and historical geopolitics. Then move closer to the present as tourism starts to expand with the arrival of hippies and mountaineers. Finally we voyeuristically peek at a darker underbelly as modern commercialisation attracts both exploiters and exploited alike.
Rabi will talk to us about how he came to write this book as well as about some of the amazing stories that his research uncovered about a part of Kathmandu that I'm sure we all feel we have a certain familiarity with.
We look forward to seeing you at the lecture!
