Dear all,

looks like we will be a nice group. I suggest we meet at 8.30 in Buddhanilkantha (sleeping Vishnu). The temple complex is relatively small and we can meet in front of one of the entrances (preferably right side entrance). From there, we'll walk to Shivapuri's park entrance (15 min on a steep hill) and start our walk.

I think we have all found friends to share transport with.

If it rains, I will not do the walk but those who wish to walk can do it of course...

One last word, I have only done this walk once and have never "lead a group" so please be prepared and understanding if we have to ask for the way...

see you all on Sunday

julie

Dear all,

I just learned about a BANDH this Sunday:

·   Tamsaling Nepal Rastriya Dal has announced General Strike for 28 Aug in Kathmandu Valley and adjoining districts of Tamsaling areas demanding Tamsaling Autonomous State.

(Note: According to the bandh organizer- Ambulance, Press, Human Right, Diplomatic mission/blue plated vehicles with banner or Flag/Logo will be allowed to ply)

This might be important for those people planning to go by car to Buddhanilkantha. Unless you have a blue plate that would be difficult then I guess.

Cheers

p

Oh sigh. Well, we're not blue plate. Maybe they'll call it off ... it's happened before.

We could always hike TO Buddhanilkantha! (Just kidding :-) )

Not Fun! But I think we should try it anyway...Might not be a full bandha...

I'll try to find a taxi at 8am on Sunday...

Maybe those who have car would also prefer to share a taxi...(Shelley, her friend, I and perhaps Susanne will fill one from Sanepa)

Taxis will be bandh, too. How about doing it on Saturday? Any possibility of that?

I don’t really know but it might be not such a harsh Bandh. There is always the question how strictly it can be imposed…

we cannot go to Shivapuri on Saturday because there is a famous run organised... I also have other plans on Saturday...

I<ve been here long enough now to think that the bandah will likely not be very serious...I opt to give it a try on Sunday...

Yeah, sometimes you get lucky. My husband's Nepali, and his reaction is basically, well, that area is Tamsaling, so it could most definitely be enforced pretty strongly. We wouldn't take out a private vehicle. But sometimes taxis are adventurous, if they charge a lot.

However, folks would want to leave really, really early. At the last bandh, they'd burned three taxis by 7 a.m. Protesters do let the people get out of the taxis before setting them on fire ... rocks seldom hit the windows ... sometimes bandhs are no biggie ... and white folks always tend to be safer anyway and could maybe stick a "tourist vehicle" sign on the taxi window and count on being immune ... but, well, food for thought :-)

After 5 p.m. it should be fine for coming back. So the best thing would be -- well, the best thing would be for it to be called off or have a blue-plate vehicle -- but the best thing after THAT would be to leave very early (like 6 a.m.) and then be prepared to walk back from Kopan if necessary. It should be OK to get a taxi back after 5 p.m. in Kopan, when the bandh should be over.

I don't honestly think we'll really know until the morning of the bandh. If it's called off, I'd really love to do a hike!!!

Hi Budhanilakantha hiking folks,

Well, the news on the Nepali radio is that the bandh is still on. Don't know if any traffic is moving in my area (Jawalakhel). The other news is that Maoists plan a big protest at Ratna Park at 8:30 a.m. to protest the shooting ... so I guess they expect to be able to get there somehow, bandh or not. We won't take our car out during a bandh until we really know what's up, traffic-wise (which we probably won't until 9-ish), but anyone who's game for a taxi might have luck.

We'd definitely be up for a nice long hike after all this rain, but, well, guess we're bailing (and hoping that will guarantee that everyone else has a good hike and we just seem silly and over-reactive :-) )

Cheers,

Sally

hi guys!

We managed to go to shivapuri relatively easy...But got "lost" trying to find the Gompa...There are steps in the park that seem to lead nowhere...If you try to reach the Nagi Gompa, never take the first steps you see on the left side of the road...

the walk was nice anyway but next time, try to find a better guide than me!

cheers

julie

hi Juli, and the hikers,
good that you made it. But where did you end up? did you reach the Gompa? The first steps go up/down to Shivapuri top.
Nagi Gompa steps are much futher along the "mainroad".
But I hope it was nice anyway. I was just too lazy to come after I did the Shivapuri run on Saturday. And I had slipped badly on the run (exactly on those steps up to Shivapuri) and wanted to give my body some rest. Next time I will come.
I plan to find the way from Campa Devi to Pharping.  If someone is intersted to come with me the steep way up to Campa Devi and from there search the trail to Pharping, would be great. Probably Saturday. Will post it.
See you,
Susanne

Dear Susanne,

Many apologies. I could not make it this time. I am not feeling well since yesterday afternoon and have to leave Pokhara tomorrow early morning. I wish I could go.  I am sure next time we will make it together.

The route you have decided seems interesting. I have never been on that way .

Have a wonderful time.

Regards,

arjun
