Its funny how all these web sites and news sites think Hull is like this great digital city, it
stinks because Hull is deprived when it comes to Broadband.

Plus no ISP's will bother coming to Hull to provide ADSL because it just aint worth their while,
just like its not worth Freeserve et al's from coming to provide Internet Access.

I called 0800 309080 and was told BT Line no problem. It seems weird though
that people are getting so many different answers. Annoyingly for me my
bloke has already had the line installed by KC for my comp at new house
meaning he wont/isn't prepared to fork out the £100 for my BT line just yet,
so its dificult for me to make BT prove themselves and install it for me.

If I were you I would call and ask to speak to someone higher in authority.
POint out that many people are getting different answers and you want to be
sure.

I swear to you I was talking to various BT personell for an hour discussing
it and they said it is possible.

Hi

I live in one of Hull's outer villages and we had the option of going to KC
from BT. Having lived in Hull previously I opted to go to KC, and I'm glad
I did, despite the messages in the group, the service is better AND cheaper.
I certainly wouldn't go back to BT.

You must be joking! BT is far superior to KC in everyway from the technical
side of things to customer service. I loathe and despise KC from totally
ripping me off.

They charge more than BT for services they don't even provide properly.

You are seriously deluded if you think KC is better than BT.

I think if you had followed this to the end it wouldn't have happened
i.e you wouldn't have been able to get a BT line. I just put the phone
down on BT and the conversation went....
"I'm in Hull can I have a BT line please"
"What's your postcode..... Yes that's okay you can have a line..."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Yes"
"Are you really sure about that? You do know the siginificance of
being in Hull don't you?"
"What do you mean?"
"We don't have BT lines here... Perhaps you had better check with
someone else"
"Ok... I'll just put you on hold"
several minutes pass
"Sorry to keep you waiting... I'm been advised to contact marketing it
won't take long..."
10 minutes later
"Yes you are correct... You can't have a BT line however if you hadn't
insisted I check the problem then I would have sent you the
application form but the installation would have failed at the line
survey stage. Sorry. However the fact that your area is on the system
indicates that BT must be thinking of overing a service in the
furture."

Just to put things into perspective...

Just phoned up KC with respect to reactivating two ISDN lines in a
business premises......

Total cost: c. £744
From BT cost is: c. £180

When asked if there was no flexibility on that considering the lines
are already there answer is (I'm adlibing a bit here):
"NO and we can't change the prices they are fixed by Oftel"
Quick phone call to Oftel....
Followed by call back to KC
"Your prices aren't set by Oftel. They do NOT specify the prices you
charge for line installations that's up to you."
"That's true but we charge what we charge and we won't change them"
"So I'd be better waiting for BT then?"
"That's up to you"

Roll on BT.....

About this BT line of mine.
I do live in Hull, Not far from telephone house itself, And I`ve just
ordered a BT phoneline, But not on the number you gave out earlier.
I`ll give the one I rang out in a mo`.
The two people I spoke to went away and checked for me twice, Just to make
sure.
Every thing is green for go, They assured me that I would only pay 49.99 for
the line `cos I`m getting BT Surftime package thrown in with it.
The engineer has a date to come and fit the line accross to BT as well, 6th
June.
There where a few problems finding an exchange that was compatible with BT
in Hull, But I live in the HU5 area and they seem to have found one he said.
Qute a few people have asked from Hull about getting a BT line into their
houses, But a large number of them have been in the wrong areas of the city
he said.
So I must be very lucky to be in just the right area, Don`t you think?
Anyway I`ll give you all the number and you can check it out yourselves, OK?

0808 100 5152

They even asked me which telephone service I currently have before he went
to check on availability of lines in the area.
If the installation does fail at the engineering point, Then it`s a bit of a
balls up isn`t, I mean not knowing where you can put your own lines, Don`t
ya think?

Sorry to bug you about this.

I've been on with BT again and they say NO NO NO!!! Not
anywhere in Hull.

Do you have a BT job number I can talk to them about for
your installation? Obviously email me direct with this... BTY tried to
email you direct and it bounced "unknown...".

We are BT approved resellers for their lines so this is
fairly important for us.

Thanks...

It`s begining to sound as though I`ve made a big boo boo :-(
But I do have a job number, Somewhere.
I`ll see if I can find it.
But they were quite insistant that I could have a BT line though.
Damn strange business.
It seems that all telephone ppl make quite big cock-ups to me, It`s not just
KC. :-)

Well They were supposed to ring me to confirm the time and date.
No such telephone call though.
I was awakened from my slumber by someone banging on the front door.
Wasn`t quick enough to answer it though, Only about a minute, So it must
have been either, The Gasman, Electricity, Or a phone engineer :-), Or maybe
it was the Postman :-)
Coudn`t be arsed to ring BT today, Well they can`t be arsed to ring and tell
me a definate `Yes were comming round at blah blah blah time on the 6th
June` So why the hell should I ring them straight away.
Anyway, By what I`ve been reading in here, It seems that I`ve incured a
reconnection fee to KC for absolutely sweet FA!
Not very good is it, Eh BT, There all the bloody same, Phone companies.
Fancy not knowing where you may stick yer own lines. :-(
But I shall, However, Push on and ring them 2morrow.
Tried to ring KC customer helpline 2day as well.
Lines were engaged most of the afternoon.
I think ppl are getting mighty pissed off by this unholy alliance of the
Council, HDM, And KC Ltd.
I know I am.

Agreed!
Hull for definite....where the hell is our broadband????? "Digital City"?
Eh? What? You 'avin' a laugh?
But really all the phone companies in the UK are taking the piss. I've just
been to the north of Sweden, the edge of the Arctic Circle for Christ's sake
and even up among the many trees and shit loads of snow...they all have
ADSL! £60 installation and less than £15 a month.
I'm sure it's probably the same in most other countries, especially USA,
Canada and other parts of Scandinavia.
