Hi
I just swapped from demon internet to karoo.
I am on the freetime account which is supposed to be a 56k system.
What I would like to know is, If this ISP is supposed to be 56k how come I
only get 31.200 bps?
If I don`t get a better connection speed pretty damn soon I will be
cancelling and going back to demon internet :-(
The main reason I changed was that I was getting very high latency times on
games servers, In excess of 500 ms, I thought that Karoo being part of my
telephone provider would be lot faster than going by a BT exchange then down
to London and Demon, However as I mentioned before the latency is even
worse.
I don`t understand How this can be, I would like some answers if any one has
anything constructive to tell me.

Try ringing 602555 and asking KC to test your line, maybe that will
show what the problem is... or perhaps it's just your modem/drivers...

If you get consistent problems, across different ISP's then it *could*
suggest something other than the ISP being at fault...

Originally I thought it could be my system, But I`ve built several more
(upgrades and whole new systems) and it`s still the same.
Right now I have 56k v 90 modem.
When I orginally went online (before it became fashionable) over 4 years
ago, I only had a 33.6 and a DX2-66 proc`, Now I`ve got this 56 v90 and a
PII 450 and it`s worse than ever, I can`t see it being the line as It was
brand spanking new yesterday ( ie I wasn`t using this line on Demon).
However I have still tested it for noise and there aint none at all, You
could hear a pin drop :-)
But here`s the wierdest bit of all, On Virgin I get good speed, Better than
both Demon and Karoo ? Strange isn`t it? and Virgin is free!
even stranger :-(
Of course some of these ISP are faster than others during certain times, And
on dirferent servers ie Web, Mail, FTP, Are diferent speeds on diferent ISP.
But I do know for a fact that my system and/or drivers are not at fault,
Because like I said earlier I`ve had at least 5 machines in the last 3 years
all with diferent spec and components.
But I have worked out that I am better off sticking with Karoo, It`s cheaper
than Demon (no call charges) and faster, And quite a bit cheaper than Virgin
`cos you still have to pay your phone bill :-)
So I will be staying on here after all.
Also strangely, My connection still remains at 31.200bps but after about 9pm
last night it began to accelerate dramatically, It even hit about 5.5-6.0
kbps while I was dl some files from a web site.
I am looking into an ISDN line though, That will give me the speed I want
:-) I might actually be able to play some games after a gap of 3 years :-)
What sort of modems do you all have on here anyway?
And can you get anything lower than 400-500ms latency?
Thanx a lot for your feedback anyway.:-)

Hi,

ISDN (well, KSH) here, i get consist speeds all the time really,
although saying this connection has been a little tonight... i usually
get 28Mb/Hr off the news server, but it's only been 25Mb/Hr on this
connection... and i just noticed ICQ isn't connecting either, which is
unusual... i guess i haven't been touching enough wood recently... :)
Although it might be cos i haven't rebooted this PC for a week or
so... (if not more)

As for games, i don't play them, so i can't help you there really, but
the ping times are usually pretty good on ISDN from what i hear...

What model/make ISDN card do you use, If you don`t mind me asking M8?
I`ve been looking at a few just now, I`d prefer an internal one, But I`m not
fussed, The speeds the main thing I`m after I suppose.

PS
Wow a week, Jeeeeez, I only get it running for that long if I don`t touch it
:-) I just let it run SETI and leave it crunching blocks.
As sson as I try to run a game it, Well, Doesn`t, Not very well anyway.

with it... available from solwise (local shop) or from www.scan.co.uk

I`ve seen this good one, See what you think.:-)
Hayes Accurra PCI 128K TA Win95/98/2000/NT £39inc vat/p&p
From what I can remember Hayes are a very good make (created the standard
anologue protocol) aren`t they?
Don`t know much about ISDN, Not something I`ve gone into before.

Hayes sounds very familiar for some reason, but i wouldn't swap my
Asuscom for the world, well, maybe for the world, but... :)

It should sound familiar to just about anyone who`s used a modem withing the
last ten years m8 :-)
All anologue models have to be Hayes compatible, Otherwise yer modem don`t
work too well, If at all.
Hayes created the anologue dialing strings and transfer protocols.
And yes the speeds on most ISP connection do tail off, especially on a
webserver, ie when you first start to dl a file/s from either a wesite and
or an ftp they rocket away for about the first 5-10 mins But slowly but
surely they slow back down to the dismall craaaaawl, that I`m used to,
Without ISDN nowadays you`ve got no chance of getting a clean connection,
Just too many bodies on the lines :-) (`scuse the pun).

heh, but the reason it sounded familiar to me, is because is was
printed all over the 56k modem i had, before i joined the world of
ISDN of course... :)

I think microsofts optimistic download monitors might have something
to do with that too... ;-)

Definately M8 :-)

Just got my ISDN card delivered about 3 hrs ago.
Now all I need is some more money :-) and I can order the line itself (KSH).
