The pater familias, also written as paterfamilias (plural patres familias),[1] was the head of a Roman family. The pater familias was the oldest living male in a household, and could legally exercise autocratic authority over his extended family. The term is Latin for "father of the family" or the "owner of the family estate". The form is archaic in Latin, preserving the old genitive ending in -ās (see Latin declension), whereas in classical Latin the normal first declension genitive singular ending was -ae. The pater familias always had to be a Roman citizen.

"Francis Ford Coppola, now the paterfamilias, has long been centered in the Bay Area and is a linchpin of the exhibit," McBride said. "Francis's older brother, who he has always said was his greatest influence and role model, was the late August Coppola."

The key problem - and a lot remains to be learned from an investigation that has only been in progress for a couple of weeks - would appear to be the authoritarian control of the paterfamilias, Mr Tanzi himself, who brooked no criticism or rebellion from within the ranks.

Authority in ancient Rome was complex, and as one can expect from Rome, full of tradition, myth, and awareness of their own storied history. Perhaps the ultimate authority was imperium, the power to command the Roman army. Potestas was legal power belonging to the various roles of political offices. There was also auctoritas, a kind of intangible social authority tied to reputation and status. In the everyday Roman household, the absolute authority was the father, known as the paterfamilias. In this article, we will examine these various types of authority which spanned across centuries and covered all facets of Roman life - from the household to public politics to the battlefield.

The role of the paterfamilias was so important that one of the greatest honors a magistrate - usually a consul or emperor - could receive was Pater Patriae, meaning "Father of the Country". The title originally belonged to Romulus for founding Rome, therefore being the parent of Rome. Cicero received the honor in 63 BCE when he crushed the conspirators in the Catiline Conspiracy. It was also conferred to Augustus in 2 BCE by the Senate for restoring peace and stability to Rome. Later on, future emperors would also receive the honor, such as Trajan (r. 98-117 CE) and Hadrian (r. 117-138 CE).

There was a time when the North Boulder restaurant overseen by the Laudisio brothers was considered one of the best fine-dining Italian eateries in the state. In recent years, many locals know the Laudisio name for the woodburning pizza stand formerly at the Boulder Farmers Market and his paella catering events. Both were usually overseen by the avuncular, white-bearded paterfamilias, Antonio Laudisio. He and his family were also deeply involved in the dearly departed happy-hour hotspot The Med.

The Drago Family was founded by the Drago Mafia Clan in Sicily in 1921 by Vittorio Drago, paterfamilias of the Sicilian Dragos. The family moved to the United States in 1933 at the time of the Castellammarese War, allying with the Bugs and Meyer Mob, and Vittorio made friends with Lucky Luciano. The family took over Tampa along with its rackets, casinos, and whorehouses, and became one of the richest in the USA. The family fought with the Virgilio crime family, led by Santo Virgilio, in the 1940s, while under Salvatore Drago's leadership, and took over the rest of the city, and in the 1950s, invested in Havana casinos to make money with Hyman Roth. After the Cuban Revolution, they declined, and were eliminated with Salvatore's murder in the Atlantic City Massacre of 1979.
