Hello All:

I came across this from P Sambamoorthy's book on tyAgarAja and would appreciate if someone could enlighten me on what dhAtu refers to in this context.
Thanks in advance.

Kritis with caraNas of Different dhAtus
In addition to the classical ghana rAga pancaratnam, tyAgarAja composed the following kritis whose caraNas are set in different dhAtus:-
1. ninnuvina sukhamu gAna ...tODi rAga
2. Sri raghuvara suguNalaya...bhairavi rAga
3. brOcEvArevarE...Sriranjani rAga
....

For the benefit of those interested, here is the complete list of tyAgarAja kritis claimed to be having different dhAtus in different caraNas in P sAmbamUrti's book:

1. ninnuvina sukhamu gAna ...tODi rAga
2. SrI raghuvara suguNalaya...bhairavi rAga
3. brOcEvArevarE...Sriranjani rAga
4. enduku nirdaya...harikAmbhoji rAga
5. SrI raghukulApramEya...kambhOji rAga
6. nAmoralanuvini...Arabhi rAga
7. nI pada pankajamula...bEgaDa rAga
8. maravarakA nava..dEvagAndhAri rAga

Of course, these are in addition to the ghana rAga pacaratnas.

I did listen to endukU nirdaya by OST and enjoyed recognizing different musics to different caraNas. It is interesting to note that the caraNas are very short - they are almost like the pallavi, in terms of the length of the lyrics.

Question: For the rest, I am not sure if I have recordings which have all the caraNas....please let me/us know if you have any.
In the absence of recordings, I suppose I can look up the notations, for example, in TK gOvindarAo's book, right?

Thanks for the discussion,
Regards
Prabhakar

I just checked with TKG's book and find that for 4 of these 8, he only gives notation for 1 caraNa!

Is this a misgiving on part of TKG or P sAmbamUrti?

At least for one of these, namely nAmoralanu kriti, it is TKG's misgiving, I think, since Balamurali sang all the caraNas with different swaras!

Here are the details: I would appreciate if someone would help clarify the situation.

1.

1)
3 caraNas, with different swaras @TKG

2.

2)
4 caraNas, but notation
is
given
only
for the last caraNa @ TKG

3.

3)
4 caraNas, with different swaras @TKG

4.

4)
5 caraNas, with different swaras @TKG

5.

5)
4 caraNas, with different swaras for the first 3 caraNas @TKG. Is the swara for the 4th caraNa the same as that for the 3rd?

6.

6)
2 caraNas, but notation is given only for 1st caraNa @TKG. However, Balamurali’s rendering shows different swaras for the two caraNas.

7.

7)
3 caraNas, but notation is given only for the last caraNa @TKG.

8.

8)
6 caraNas, but notation is given only for the first caraNa @TKG.
