Dear All

During the recent tyAgrAja ArAdhana at Usha-Bala's house, I was reading the Wikipedia article on Bangalore nAgartnamma to learn about when she started the tyAgarAja ArAdhana.  It was apparently as late as 1941 (see copied text below).

At that time, the music festival held at this location was male-dominated and the rival performing groups prevented her from participating in the festival, and render Harikatha in front of the deity. As a challenge, she started organizing a parallel music festival at the back of the saint's temple. Her group was named "Pengal (women's) Katchi", and the Aradhana organized by her was held concurrently with the one organized by the male centric groups of the music festival, known as the Periya Katchi.

Eventually, in 1941, her activism paid off, and the opposing groups involved with the festival merged into a single entity, allowing both men and women to sing in the festival

Besides this piece of information, I found the article extremely interesting and to learn about her tenacity as a person, and a poet. I thought you may like reading it too...in case you already do not know about all these details.

Happy reading!

Prabhakar,

There is a short segment on BN in William Jackson's book on Thyagaraja and the renewal of tradition.  Have you seen it?

No - I haven't! I only have his 'Thyagaraja: Life & Lyrics". If you have this other book, perhaps I could borrow it...
Thanks
