Hello,
I know this group has Ramakrishnan Murthy aficionado-s, so I thought to post this!

Yesterday (May12, Mothers day) SIFA hosted a nice concert of Ramakrishnan Murthy with Hemmige Srivatsan on violin and B. Srivatsan on mridangam.

Just a few thoughts..
RKM was quite subdued in the beginning, perhaps bothered by the sound echoing in the hall..settled down quickly after Sarasinjanabha varnam in Kambhoji.  was expecting to be hit with many 'amma' songs but he picked many Thyagaraja kritis too.  Sadhinchene had an extra charanam that I hadn't heard before (between 'Gopi jana' and 'Vanithala').  He also repeated the swara portion of each line twice before rendering the sahitya portion - wonder why..
Birana VarAlicci by Syama Sastry was brisk, and to be honest, I hadn't realized the charnam start is entirely like 'Himadri suthe' that everyone seems to do Neraval on.
Karaharapriya was excellent alapana by both.  and he picked Chakkani Raja margamu - my favorite for the veena.  immediately he switched to RTP in Varali, plus numerous ragas to mention!  unfortunately i drifted off after that.

I think the mridangam vidwan came from India with him (was quite good), but is he performing with local accompanists in this tour? perhaps.

Sridhar

Hi Sridhar
Thanks for sharing the concert news!
Can you send the extra caraNam in sAdhincenE - quite intrigued.
Hope you are all doing well.
Here at Sruti, we enjoyed concerts of Sanjay, Ranjani/Gayathri, Jayanthi Kumaresh.

Shridhar
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Ramakrishnan Murthy’s concert. Yes, Prabha and I are among the fans of Ram. In this post modern era of CM, he seems to be somewhat of a loner in sticking to pure classicism.

I remember reading about the charanam in Sadinchane, but has never heard it. By any chance, do you have a recording?

Best wishes to the family

Mani

I had taught the fourth (extra) swara-sahityam (Saaraasaarudu) during the Pancharatnam workshop and my students know it. In the earlier generation, only the Alathur brothers used to sing it, so it went out of vogue after some time.

Thanks Sridhar, Kiranavali & Mani!
Any idea why it may have been dropped or went out of vogue?
Is it possible that it was a “non-authentic” caraNam?
Hard for me to imagine reasons for omitting it...
Also, is this extra caraNam there in all original student traditions? Walajpet etc.

Kiranavali: can you share a recording?

Thanks

It was supposed to have been sung only by one sishya paramparas. Another posit I have heard is that some of these charanams, including the last two in Jagadanandakaraka, were supposed to have been later additions and modifications. Not exactly sure if Tyagaraja himself did that later in his life. For that matter, the swara-sahitya format is itself supposed to be a later development. Lot of jumbled information...

Re Jagadannandakaraka:  I remember reading in one of Prof. Sambamurthy's books that Thyagaraja first composed only the first four charanams with his mudhra in the fourth.  According to  the author, T added  chranams, three at a time with mudhras,  on two separate occasions. I have heard a recording of Malladi brothers on the Youtube where they render this kriti in that order, viz, four charanams ending with "karadhṛta" ...; followed by three charanams ending with "purana purusha", and finally the last three charanams. The brothers also mentioned in that recording that it was Semmangudi who organized/systematized the present format.

There are recordings of Sri. Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer (MVI) and Alathur brothers rendering Jagadanandakaraka. They have sung them in the present format only. Not sure if MVI would have subscribed to Semmangudi Mama's version of any song. Alathur's versions were more Walajapet parampara, so again questionable. Let me have a chat with my father and see what he has to say about this.
