Title : Fostering ICT use in classrooms through ICT enabled interventions for professional development: the case of CLIx

Abstract : The Connected Learning Initiative (CLIx) is a technology enabled initiative at scale for high school students in select states of Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana. CLIx intends to bring about change in classroom practices by promoting interactive practices among teachers. It intends to promote effective engagement with teachers for professional capacity building, by organizing TPD training workshops and initiating communities of practices. By these select means of constant engagement with its teachers, CLIx intends to shift teachers’ pedagogical practices and promote digital engagement of teachers for the purpose of teaching and learning. Analysis of panel data shows that over almost 2 years, teachers’ score on select CLIx outcomes- beliefs about role of technology in education, ICT engagement, Digital skills and pedagogy practiced - have shown significant improvement. The paper discussed the changes in teacher perceptions and self reported classroom practices, in relation to the nature of professional development practices of CLIx. Thus it contributes to literature on professional development with ICT and for ICT use in classrooms.

Cross-sectional analysis of teachers’ data from midline survey shows significant difference between control and treatment groups, in terms of digital skills, ICT engagement and beliefs about technology usage. However change in these outcome is gauged from analysis of panel data for 60 teachers. A significant change in the select outcome is witnessed over 2 years. While teachers across states were mostly in agreement with the positive beliefs about role of technology in teaching and learning, they had very little engagement with ICT in the baseline. Pedagogical practices were predominantly traditional. However, using analysis of paired t-test, this paper does show a significant change in teacher practices from baseline to midline. Apart from contextualising this change this paper also discusses challenges emphasised by teachers and the major hurdles faced in implementation of CLIx on field.
