Over one hundred school students of Karnali region, displaced by the
unrest, are now in Kathmandu working as carpet vendors and laborers, a
report said Sunday. According to the Nepal Samacharpatra report, they
have been working in the capital for the last two months and most of
them are the students from primary to secondary level. The students
said that they were forced to leave Karnali region because of the
security threats to them both by the Maoists and the security forces.
Many more are working in other district headquarters while some others
have gone to India with their parents, the students said. "The security
forces accuse us of helping the Maoists while the Maoists torture us
for not taking part in their programs," the students lamented. Min
Bahadur Shahi, who is President of Karnali Integrated Rural Development
and Research Centre in Jumla, said the number of students leaving the
region is increasing due to the Government-Maoist conflict. "Unless
both the parties stop violating the basic human rights of the people,
the problem will not be resolved," he said. When contacted, the daily
said Spokesperson at the Ministry of Education, Lava Prasad Tripathi
expressed ignorance about the Karnali students' plight in Kathmandu.
