KATHMANDU, Feb. 15: A programme called the School Nutrition Programme
(Karnali Zone) has been approved and come into operation in connection
with implementing the Karnali Development Programme which has been
referred to in the Number 17 point in the 21-point programme issued by
the Council of Ministers in February last year. Twelve thousand
students studying in 125 community schools in the 24 Village
Development Committees (VDCs) of the five Districts of the Karnali Zone
will be benefited from this programme, the main objective of which is
to alleviate poverty and increase the student enrolment and attendance
rate.
The districts where the programme has been implemented are Dolpa,
Jumla, Kalikot, Mugu and Humla.
The programme would be executed so that the schoolchildren of these
districts will get the afternoon snacks from the start of coming
academic session. The programme, which is targeted at the 450,000
schoolchildren of 21 districts with the belief that it will help
towards meeting the goals set in the Education for All programme
implemented by the government and the target of poverty alleviation set
by the Tenth Plan, has now been implemented in 26 districts including
the five districts of the Karnali Zone.
A total of 462,000 schoolchildren of 26 districts where the programme
has been implemented are expected to be benefited by this programme.
