Following a row between students and the school administration over the
attempted rape of a student by a teacher, Karnali Technical School in
Jumla district in far-western Nepal has been forced to shut down for an
indefinite period.
According to students, Dr Kishor Shrestha had tried to sexually assault
one of his female students (name withheld) while out on a practical
educational excursion at Patarashi VDC 14-miles away from the district
headquarters, on March 19.
School activities came to a complete halt after the principal, Dipak
Nepali Chhetri, didn't heed to the students' demand to take actions
against Shrestha.
Meanwhile, the victim has accused the principal of helping her
perpetrator run away.
When Nepali could not come up with a steadfast decision regarding what
kind of action to take against Shrestha, he had tried to flee from the
school on Tuesday. The students had however managed to stop him in
time, after which they surrounded the school demanding to reopen it.
Students also reached the District Administration Office where Chief
District Officer and Chairman of the Education Administration
Committee, Gunj Bahadur MC, assured them that an investigation would be
conducted and appropriate actions would be taken against the accused if
found guilty.
