Thank you for applying for a grant from the KHS PTA Grants Initiative Program.
 
Unfortunately the committee did not vote to approve your request for Kindles at this time.  Our committee is concerned with a few items.  First, Nooks are being purchased by the reading team, and we felt that we would like the entire school to have the same type of system for consistency and book sharing.  Secondly, there is a lot of concern about technological items becoming obsolete.  Some committee members thought items such as the i-pad, while more expensive, may make more sense with their variety of applications and it was thought that those type of systems may be "upgradeable", or at least have more applications that might not fall behind technologically speaking so quickly.  We have not done the research, and while nobody knows what direction these items will take in the future, as a group we felt money would be better spent on something with more application possibilities.

 

Please feel free to submit either another request if you feel the Kindle is definitely the way you want to go, or create a new application for something that may be more useful overall in the classroom.  We understand the purpose of the Kindles is to help struggling readers, but with all the changes in technology we are hoping to get something that can be helpful to all those children who need something special to read with, but also something that can potentially help that student struggling with math or science.  And if the concerns are only for reading, we would like to have just one system in use so that books can be shared.  Additionally, we are going to ask if the Nooks can be a "sign out" item in the reading room, especially if they raise money at this weeks bookfair to purchase more!

 

Thank you for applying and please keep the requests coming!  Our position is to try to use the money raised by our school to get the best equipment we can to help our kids.  We respect that you are in the classroom with students all day and know their needs, but our hope is that you will reconsider something that can grow with our classes and offer more.  There will be additional grant money available at the start of the school year, so if you as a team would like something else, please let me know and I will be happy to pass that information along.

Hi Kathy-

I just wanted to forward this along. I know that our original grant was rejected, and that there was conversations about using the kindle vs the nook. I changed the grant, including our hopes of receiving an e-reader, whichever is most appropriate to where the district is using. I hope that this can be reconsidered for next school year if there is still time.
