Consider coming to Terra to learn about abuse in non-normative frameworks! This workshop originates from an organisation that works for survivors of abuse in queer/trans, non-monogamous, and/or kink relationships.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month! As many as 1/3 people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender and/or other gender or sexual minority have experienced abuse in a relationship. It can be hard to recognize and address partner abuse in LGBQ/T communities for many reasons--from the higher standards these relationships are held to under the eye of a heteronormative, cissexist society, to the fact that the canonical framework of discussing intimate partner violence and abuse doesn't include our communities.

1. Workshop :

We'll develop a model of thinking about partner abuse that extends beyond one man-one woman long term relationships. We'll also identify particular, additional risks that LGBQ/T-identified folks face in intimate partner violence. What do abuse tactics look like? How can they be masked, complicated, or exasperated by interpersonal power dynamics? Finally, we'll talk about how to support a friend or loved one who may be experiencing abuse.

It's dangerous to go alone! Take this: resources and a support system. <3

2. Open Forum with SARA :

According to the campus climate survey, 0% of undergraduate 'gender-diverse' (aka non-cisgender) students felt that Stanford's support system for students going through emotional crisis were very effective. 1% said they were effective. Overall, queer and trans students had much lower ratings of satisfaction with all of Stanford's resources and higher rates of sexual harassment and assault than cisgender or straight peers.

In this open forum with representatives of the SARA (Sexual Assault & Relationship Abuse Education and Response) Office on campus, learn about resources that exist on campus, share experiences, and discuss how Stanford can better serve our needs.

--- --- ---

Topics surrounding sexual assault and relationship abuse can be triggering or otherwise difficult to discuss. Terra Bites will work to provide support and resources to attendees who need it both during and after the event. We'll have alternate spaces for anybody who needs to step out of the conversation and take a breath, process, or grab some food. Additionally, there will be a counsellor available at all times to talk through any emotions that may arise.

Note that many of the professional staff present are mandated reporters for all students, and dorm staff are mandated reporters for their dorm's residents. While the staff can provide support, counselling, or discuss hypotheticals for their residents, please be aware that they are private but non-confidential resources. Terra staff can be confidential counsellors for anyone living in a different dorm. If you have any specific privacy or confidentiality concerns, please contact Zineb Oulmakki at zi...@stanford.edu
