MEDIA ADVISORY
September 16, 2023
WHO: Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment
WHAT: Press Conference to Urge State Agents to Release Jonila Castro ASAP
WHEN: September 16, 2023, 2PM
WHERE: Kamuning Bakery Cafe @43 Judge Jimenez Corner K-1st Street, Quezon City, 1103 Metro Manila
Yesterday, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict held a press conference on the abduction of Jhed Tamano and Jonila Castro.
The press conference solidified findings from a recent fact-finding mission conducted by Kalikasan and various civil society groups on September 4-5, 2023. It confirmed the involvement of state agents in the enforced disappearance of the two young activists.
At the press conference, Jonathan E. Malaya, National Security Council Assistant Director General, even openly admitted that the two women had been held in a safe house under state control. Moreover, the statements made during this press con contradicted each other and diverged from earlier accounts provided by other state agents, including those made by the Orion, Bataan Municipal Police to the fact-finding mission team on September 4, and by PNP Spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo to a Manila Bulletin reporter on September 6, among others.
As the NTF-ELCAC has admitted to having custody of the two women, we challenge them to release Jonila without delay to her mother and the rest of her family, just as they have released Jhed Tamayo to her father. State agents are bound to adhere to legal due processes, and if the two environmental defenders face legal charges, these must be filed expeditiously in the courts to ensure that their detention is not an illegal detention. If no charges exist against the two women, Jonila should be released without delay.
During the press conference, Roselie Castro, Jonila's mother, will make this heartfelt plea. Kalikasan stands in full support of her demands.
Release Jonila Now. Surface All Desaparecidos!
