CARMMA: House bill on Marcos Sr. birthdate as special non-working holiday is state-imposed idolatry, revision of history
The Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses and Martial Law (CARMMA) assailed the passage on final reading of House Bill No. 9216, declaring September 11th as Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Day in Ilocos Norte. The congressional bill, which still does not have a counterpart in the Senate, would declare Marcos Sr.’s birthdate as a special non-working holiday in the province.
CARMMA convenor Kris Lacaba said, “This House bill sponsored by Marcos Sr.’s grandson Sandro is their family’s latest attempt to revise history and portray the late dictator as a hero whose life and works should be emulated and celebrated.”
“The Marcoses may succeed in marking this date on the calendar,” said Lacaba. “But what remains indelible in the Filipino people’s minds are the thousands of human rights violations and the billions of dollars plundered from the public coffers in the course of Marcos Sr.’s rule,” said Lacaba. “No amount of state-imposed idolatry can erase this collective memory. History's verdict endures beyond official holidays.”
