IP groups to commemorate Int’l Day of World’s IPs, to hold protest and a solidarity event

August 9 marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (IDWIP) around the globe. It was the date of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982, and was decided as the day of commemorating the world's IPs during the United Nations General Assembly on December 23, 1994. This year’s theme highlights the role of “Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination.”
To commemorate IDWIP 2023, IP groups in the Philippines will hold a protest action in front of Camp Aguinaldo on August 9 at 10am to call for an end to the attacks against Indigenous communities. These attacks include militarization, bombings, and political vilification of IPs.
Later that day, a solidarity event will commence at 4pm at the penthouse of Fil Garcia Tower, Kalayaan Ave., Quezon City. The solidarity event will feature community cooking of Indigenous cuisine with Chef Lao Castillo, discussion on the IP situation in the Philippines, film-showing, and open jam.
Media coverage is requested. Interviews with Indigenous youth and leaders, and photo opportunities will be available.
