On the deferment of Rodrigo Duterte’s confirmation hearing at the ICC
KARAPATAN is roundly disappointed with the deferment of Rodrigo Duterte's confirmation hearing on September 23, 2025, after the Duterte camp asked for an indefinite postponement of the proceedings.
The victims and their families, especially, have waited too long for this opportunity to air their stories in hopes of attaining justice and accountability. There is fear that any postponement in the proceedings gives the Dutertes the opportunity to harass, endanger, or even eliminate the prosecution witnesses.
This postponement is part of the Duterte camp's desperate attempts to prevent justice and truth from prevailing. We have heard that former police colonel Royina Garma will be testifying for the prosecution, thus strengthening the case of crimes against humanity versus Duterte.
We will remain vigilant and keep watch if the International Criminal Court Pre-Trial Chamber will stay true to its declaration of a limited postponement and that the process of determining the charges to be levelled against Duterte will proceed forthwith. We will not relent in the quest to hold Rodrigo Duterte and his cohorts accountable for the tens of thousands of extrajudicial killings and other grave human rights violations.

In light of the postponement of the confirmation of charges against former President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC), families of victims of the drug war led by the Rise Up for Life and for Rights, lawyers of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers Atty. Neri Colmenares and Atty. Kristina Conti, and rights advocates from Karapatan will hold a press conference to condemn the delaying tactics of the Duterte camp, as they continue calls for justice and accountability ASAP.
