ON THE RECENT ICC PRE-TRIAL CHAMBER’S DECISION ON THE CASE OF FORMER PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE

The decision of the International Criminal Court’s Pre-Trial Chamber resuming the pre-trial proceedings against former President Rodrigo Duterte comes as we are fast approaching the one-year mark since former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest and detention at The Hague. Duterte Panagutin network welcomes the said decision, as well as the Chamber’s rejection of Duterte’s motions which are seen as dilatory tactics of his camp.

We are also approaching the ten-year mark since 2016, when the then Mayor of Davao became President of the Philippines. We have witnessed since then the destruction of our most sacred human freedoms, the erosion of our morals and justice system, and the pillaging of our lives, liberty and dignity.

We are witnessing in real-time the unfolding of history and the course of justice in the history of our beloved, flawed, but enduring nation. The ICC continues its independent work of investigating and uncovering the truth of Duterte’s reign of terror, and we await patiently and confidently that justice will be attained

We renew our call for truth, justice and accountability for those most responsible for the atrocities of the drug war and the tens of thousands of our families and neighbors killed in a senseless policy of murder and violence that dehumanized and targeted the poorest of the poor and innocents that needed support, not slaughter.

We remind all who work toward this goal that there are many of us who will continue the fight for a return to the rule of law and due process. That the majority did not want our police to become agents of assasination and extrajudicial killing. And most of all, that we were all victims and survivors of a brutal drug war, and we will have our day in court, and we will see those most responsible for their crimes receive their just reward.
