SwamiAyyappan , released on August 17, 1975, was produced by Subramaniam Religious Trust and shot at Merryland Studios and around the Sabarimala Temple. Directed by P Subramaniam, the dialogues were by Sreekumaran Thampi.

The film went on to win State awards in various categories like Best Cinematography (Masthan), Best Lyricist (Vayalar Rama Varma), Best Child Actor (Master Raghu) and Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value.

Produced simultaneously in Malayalam and Tamil, popular stars from both languages were included in the star cast. Master Shekhar, Gemini Ganeshan, AVM Rajan, K. Balaji, V.K. Ramaswami, Manohar and others from Tamil, Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair, P.K. Abraham, Hari, S.P. Pillai, Bahadur, Sreevidya, Unni Mary, Rani Chandra and others from Malayalam were part of this film.

The old and weak Sanku Pillai (S.P. Pillai) who is helped by a divine power to climb the mountain and complete his pilgrimage, Prabhakaran (Raghavan), a military officer, who, on his way home to begin his pilgrimage to the temple, is saved from a road accident, a little girl (Baby Sumathi), who, while travelling with her father (Vanchiyoor Madhavan Nair), to the temple is saved from a poisonous snake, the atheist Sankaralingam Mudaliyar (V.K. Ramaswami) of Madurai who is cured of his stomach ailment by the sacred ash from the temple are some of the side stories that make up the film.

Jayavijayas were born to Gopalan Tantri and Narayaniamma at Kadamputra Madom on the banks of Meenachilar in Kottayam Nagampadam. His father, Gopalan Tantri, who was a disciple of Gurudev, learned the musical taste of the twins and took them to Raman Bhagavatar to teach them singing at the age of six. Later Mavelikara Radhakrishna Iyer and Alathur Brothers became their gurus. They passed Ganabhushanam from Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Akademi.

They had their advanced training from Carnatic giants like Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar for 18 years and under Dr Balamuralikrishna for six years. The untimely death of his twin brother K G Vijayan in 1988 left Jayan depressed, but he forgot his grief through Ayyappa songs. Jayan was honored with the Padma Shri and the Travancore Devaswom Board honored him with the Harivarasana award for his ayyappa songs. He also received the Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award.

P Leela's song 'Ishta Daivame Swami Saranamayyappa', first composed by Jayavijayan for HMV Gramophone Records, became the first Ayyappa Bhakti song sung by a woman. Yesudas's first devotional song 'Darshanam Punya Darshanam' Sreekovil nada thurannu, ellamellam Ayyappan, Shreesabareesha Deenadayala, Pathinetten Padiyeri, nallathu varuthuka, vandiperiyarum medum nadappathayakki.. and the list of Ayyappa devotional songs went on.

Concerts were held at thousands of venues within and outside the country. Jayan was able to make musical talents like Yesudas, S P Balasubramaniam, Sheerkazhi Govindarajan, T M Soundararajan, S Janaki, P Susheela, Vani Jayaram and many others sing. He composed music for 19 films in Malayalam and four in Tamil. The first film was 'Bhumiyile Malakha'. Nakshatradeepangal thilangi, Hridayam Devalayam etc. are still favorite songs of the music experts.

Writer and director Mahesh Vettiyar and team had to do some serious delving in and research to piece together some missing links in the legend. Interesting location scouts to places like Cherthala, Alappuzha, Nilakkal and interactions with people aged over 85 years living in and around the Pandalam area revealed many sides and interpretations to the same story.

Presently, 70 - 90 artists are working on the film, which is in the final stages of production and is slated for an early 2013 theatrical release. The film will have six songs, penned by ex- Chief Secretary and Malayalam University Vice-Chancellor K Jayakumar and set to music by Viswajith.

Mathyamavathi, hindolam, mohanan, sudhdha dhanyasi and sudhdha sAveri

can look alike in film music as in film music graha bEdam is so very

common. In the single film song just by the graha bEdam one Raga can

be made to sound like another. (iLaiyarAjA does a lot of experiments)

It is very difficult to catagorize the songs into one of this raga.
