I know that one of the main benefits of Kara is the HTML Builder and strongly typed views. However, with some frameworks such as AngularJS that has a whole bunch of custom attributes and elements, would it not make sense to allow alternative view engines? Or just restrict to rendering of plain HTML with no server-side processing?

You could also consider JavaFX, like kool.io does. :)

I don't think there's anything stopping someone from implementing an ActionResult that renders a different view engine. This should fit rather well with the existing system. The only thing we might need to iron out is making the layout generic as well (since right now it assumes a concrete instance of HtmlLayout).
