A boy is taken for treatment At least 10 people have died in Lahore in eastern Pakistan from diarrhoea caused by contaminated water supplies, the authorities say. Some 2,600 people are being treated at eight emergency camps around the city. It is the second time this month that there have been deaths in the province of Punjab caused by polluted water. On Tuesday President Pervez Musharraf set a target of 2008 for a network of purification plants to supply the entire country with clean water. Poor district "Two patients died in hospital while eight other deaths have been confirmed on the basis of information collected by us," Lahore's Mayor, Mian Amer Mahmoud, told the BBC's Shahid Malik. The problems are concentrated in the poor district of Ravi Road and adjoining areas. Sources in the city's health department attribute the spread of diarrhoea to the supply of contaminated water to households. "Because of the outdated underground network of water supply and drainage pipes, faecal matter gets mixed up with drinking water, which is an obvious cause of water-borne diseases," an official told the BBC. Up to 11 people died earlier in June in the southern town of Rahim Yar Khan after an outbreak of diarrhoea. Initially the authorities denied any deaths.
