Objet : Re: [KI-LC] Ratifying merged ULX+IdPS charter
All -
Apologies for the misfire on this aborted call for votes by the LC.
While compiling our checklist, we uncovered the fact that the ULX group itself hadn't held a vote on these changes, yet. That's being rectified now, and will be concluded by next week.
In case folks feel like they're in the dark, I thought it might help to provide a brief overview. In short, the ULX and IdP Selection groups have been discussing for the past couple months how to work together given their similar activities. After the dust settled on the debate, both groups decided in principle to merge.
When exploring their options, both groups decided the best path forward was to modify the ULX charter slightly to cover the IdP Selection work.
Then, once the new ULX charter is in place, IdP Selection will move its work to ULX, with all their members joining ULX, and then shut down IdP Selection.
With that, here is the detailed plan of action:
1. ULX to pass motion ratifying the new charter 2. ULX requests LC to approve new charter 3. LC to pass motion ratifying the new ULX charter 4. Staff to add new ULX charter and archive old one 5. IdP Selection to pass motion contributing material to ULX 6. ULX to pass motion accepting contributed material 7. Staff to move material from IdP Selection to ULX wiki 8. IdP Selection notifies its members to join ULX 9. IdP Selection votes to close down IdP Selection 10. LC accepts IdP Selection request to close down 11. Staff to add notice to IdP Selection wiki of change 12. Staff make IdP Selection wiki read-only 13. Staff to update wiki and site to denote IdP Selection change
Given these steps, you'll see that the only thing that the LC needs to do in this case is ratify the changes to the ULX charter. Once that's done, the IdP Selection members contribute their materials to ULX and then join the group. Once IdP Selection holds the vote to close down, they notify the LC they've done so but there's nothing for the LC to do other than accept their decision to close down.
Fortunately, this process is in keeping with the one we're formalizing.
While they're essentially merging, in practice one group is closing down and the other accepting their work (and members). Nice and clean (especially since both groups agree).
As of this note, IdP Selection has already approved the modified ULX charter (which wasn't strictly required, but clears the way for them to move forward). They've also voted to contribute their work to ULX (step
5) when ready.
ULX is currently holding their vote to approve the proposed modifications to the charter (step 1). Once that's complete, they'll come back to us and request ratification of the modifications.
Fortunately, we've already gone through this process for the InfoSharing WG, so we're not breaking new ground here. Assuming the LC agrees with their suggested changes, there shouldn't be any surprises.
This all means that the LC can hold tight for another week when this ballot to ratify the charter returns for real. After that, the ball's back in play for ULX and IdP Selection for their subsequent steps.
Please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions.
Thanks,
Trent
