to Better Ballot KC, Vote No On Ranking Ban
 Vote NO
on MO Amendment 7

News about money:

We've gotten word about all the out-of-state organizations that have money to give to ranked choice voting (RCV) campaigns: they're prioritizing the several states with positive elections this year. Ones wanting to institute RCV, not ban it. They reason that any ban passed here can be overturned later.

But any ban passed here will have negative reverberations around the country, since it would be the very first time voters had voted to ban, as opposed to legislatures. There have been legislatures that banned by statute, but statutes can be easily undone. And they're more likely to be undone in those other states if we can get Missouri citizens to vote down a ban here.

Our Strengths

Since many haven't heard of ranked choice voting and very few have heard of Amendment 7, we're finding it really doesn't take but a minute or two to convince the average person to vote no. It's not a long or complicated argument. And we have even better luck when our first words are "The legislature put this on the ballot . . . "

Our ideas are popular once people know about them.

Our Weaknesses

Even if it only takes a minute or two per person, we have to reach an awful lot of people. And the ballot candy is on there for a reason -- it's to get a "yes" vote as a kneejerk reaction. The one poll done that we know of shows that it works. It is easy to convince people that this is tricky wording for a measure really about something else.  But only if we can reach them.

Our resources are shoestring.

Our Needs

We need people to write a Letters to the Editor.

We need people to spread the word through leafleting, flyers to post, yard signs, and social media.

We need those who have contacts to do outreach to Democrats and Republicans.

We need those with contacts to help see to it that those who put out ballot recommendations say no the Amendment 7 (for example, South Kansas City Alliance and the NAACP already have).

And we need those of us doing mountains of volunteer work to not have to also pay for the materials. We won't follow normal election custom by deluging you with fund-raising emails, but the legislature did impose this election on us all of a sudden, and absolutely every donation, large or small, helps. And of course there's much more we could do if we get many donations.
