So simply put, SCOTUS basically rendered the Voting Rights Act of the '60's abolished. The thinking is that racist issues are no longer that big a thing in the South.
So if that's the case, why has essentially EVERY Southern state immediately moved to gerrymander their voting districts to the CLEAR disadvantage of Black voters?
And note that these changes, in some cases, are occurring AFTER voting has begun. This late change is patently illegal everywhere, even where it's happening.
SCOTUS actually ruled some time ago that redistricting in Texas and Alabama couldn't go forth because it was too close to the voting date. In those instances, the date was 3 or more months away. But that was too close to make changes that helped DEMOCRATS. But now, the current ruling that clearly helps REPUBLICANS can proceed weeks before the election and even AFTER voting has started.
The racism is patently overt. SCOTUS isn't even trying to hide their preference here.
This is a travesty of justice. And it proves, a priori, that racism is still very much alive in the South. As soon as the states were allowed to make race based changes, they immediately proceeded to do so. No more proof is needed. Congress needs to pass a new VRA that is somehow SCOTUS-proof. Otherwise Black voters will continue to get disenfranchised more and more.
This isn't the only way that Blacks and browns and others have their vote restricted or rendered less effective.
The USC will only be color blind when those who actually do the work of governing are. That isn't anywhere near the reality as of today.
