This is a seriously bullshit article. But it fits the current Trump doctrine regarding foreign policy.
"We are a superpower. Time to start acting like it".
So the author points out that foreign policy should transcend right and wrong. We don't need to be "polite" about asserting our needs.
What bullshit. How sure am I that he's full of shit? Because he pointed our his idiocy himself.
His words: we have a base in Okinawa. Yes we do. And we didn't "take" the island by force or purchase. In fact, after we DID occupy it after WWII, we gave it back to the citizens. So that's one strike against taking Greenland. We also have a huge military base in Turkey, Incirlik. We don't occupy Turkey; nor did we conquer it. We also have bases in Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Bahrain. Not conquest needed.
So the author is full of shit, as is the Trump admin
So instead of threatening takeover in an attempt to coerce some sweet deal, why not just increase our current presence. Let Greenland/Denmark rule the island like they do today; and negotiate a military presence like we've done all over the world for 80 years.
And stop knocking over more China in your shop, Trump. The world doesn't see you (us US) as great, just a clumsy bully.

In all honesty the Greenlanders have one foot and 5 toes out the door from Denmark anyway. It would make very good geo political sense to make them a protectorate of some kind. Although it could probably be done without so much bull in China shopping

Good call, BK. The geo-politics makes Greenland a smart target. But the threats and all  are so antagonistic. I found an article about the Greenland/Denmark relationship
Greenland citizens are pretty overwhelmingly in favor of independence; and their relationship with Denmark permits that.
So Denmark is in the odd position of clinging to a territory that doesn't want  to stay.
Maybe if anybody in the Trump admin had a notion of diplomacy they could push for Greenland's independence and then negotiate deals with the new country.
Denmark contributes only a few billion dollars to support Greenland. We  could take over that support with money found in Elon Musk's couch cushions.
There are apparently all kinds of mineral resources that could enrich everyone involved. Win-win.
But enough with the threats. If we antagonize Greenlanders enough, maybe they'll get in bed with Russia/China. Not likely; but if we behave like autocratic thugs, then our advantages as a liberal democracy diminish.
And of course with global warming, Greenland may become a HOT real estate market. Maybe that's what Trump is really angling for.
