Somehow, I naively feel that this isn't going to be like then. When looking at the relative economies of the world, Germany ranks 3rd, ahead of Japan and California. As such, considering NATO's construct (and Trump's insistence) Germany should have Europe's biggest military.
One could say that Germany has been down this path TWICE and that a repeat should come with a warning label.
But they were decimated after WW I-II; today they're pretty well off. Maybe not so much incentive to flex their nationalist muscle.
