Add him to the list of most important people of the last few decades, along with Crick. 
There is a very short novel called The Double Helix, about their work on DNA. It's a good read  of a couple of hours. A few lession:
W and C were slackers, about the get tossed out their pHd programs. 
There was actually a race to figure out the structure of DNA with of all people Linus Pauling, as well as a couple of other labs. 
Much of the vital work in electron microscopy was done by a woman, who got little credit at the time. This despite doing work that W and C were incapable of doing. 
And the rest is history.
