This article puts a dollar value on the cost maintaining the military. DDE did it back then; the article puts it into today's costs. DDE minced no words; he called bloated military spending "theft" of the American people. 

Do recall now that DDE was NOT some commie/hippie/ pinko. He was the military leader of the Allies effort in Europe to defeat Hitler. That guy. So spare us the BK bullshit about the necessity of the military. That's baked into the reality. But the military spends way too much money getting way too little for it. They're running out of million dollar missiles prosecuting a stupid mission against Iran. And China is keeping score. They now know exactly how straightforward it is to fight a war of attrition with the US.
