Anyway, if a US Senator resigns after May 1, his/her replacement is chosen by the legislature, not the Governor. Presto, a Republican controlled body gets to choose instead of a Democratic Governor.
Worse, in theory the replacement Senator could resign in the proper time frame, allowing the replacement to be chosen in the same fashion. Rinse, repeat; and Kansas has Republican Senators FOREVER. And the electorate is frozen out entirely.
Way to go Kansas.
Note in the reading that the man who proposed this bill had a specific problem with Amendment 17 to the USC. He thinks this is how Senators should be chosen all the time.
Republicans don't like elections, even in states where they hold the majority.
