What have protest rallies done lately; that is the issue?
1) No ICE mega-detention centers have opened anywhere in the US, due to mass protest

2) Avelo Airlines stopped flying detainees due to protest'

3) Citizens Bank, which had been helping to fund ICE, has stopped doing it. Why? Protests, along with people removing MILLIONS of dollars from accounts.

The point? Protests sometimes get results. Not all the time; not every time. Some of the time.

Easy there cowboy. I'm not exactly willing to take it on faith that 1 and 2 are actually causal relationships. I very much doubt the result of number 1 has much at all to do with protests.

Number 2? I've never in my life heard of Avelo airlines. But bad publicity can certainly affect a company's bottom line...and $$$ is always a health motivator. Consumers DO have power in a capitalist society....not by standing around and holding signs....but by flexing their $$$ muscle. No protests required.

And number 3 is due solely to the addendum: "....along with people removing millions of dollars from accounts." If that really happened, THAT is what prompted the change...not a guy holding a sign.

Speaking of protests, one of my favorite YouTubers is Jeff Gray. He is a one-man show who challenges anti-loitering and anti-panhandling laws in municipalities (mostly in the South) by soliciting in public places. Hey has had many trespasses overturned, caused many police settlements, and has forced some laws to be repealed. So, it seems a protests can be effective, sometimes...

I guess i need to be more specific when i rail against protests.

Grass roots targeted campaigns that take a legal approach to affect change against laws or regulations......are absolutely legit and a bedrock of a functioning free society. So kudos to this guy...i guess. 

Holding pictures of dead babies outside an Ascentist Health facility or a Fuck Trump sign outside of a Tesla dealership is pure ego stroking dipshittery.

Yeah, I think this is a good take. Be specific in the legal matter you are protesting/challenging.

G, your last posts smacked of reasonableness. Before that you seemed less enchanted with protests pretty much altogether. 

As for the specifics, why do think that Trump did a U-turn on the ICE facilities. Tens of millions of dollars were spent to acquire these properties, many tens of millions. And suddenly ALL of the projects were halted. I'll stipulate that some of the communities pointed out that these ICE stations would have used up utilities that didn't exist. But I'm not sure that such FACTS would deter Trump and his stupids from proceeding. But public hearings and public outcry seems to have had a significant effect. 

As for #2-3, of course money is the motivation. But the protests likely highlighted  the public's intent to boycott. As for the bank, yes, people have taken money out of the bank and continue to do so. 

The direct effect of protests is probably hard to assess. There is likely some add-on effects based on the spreading of citizens' feelings. Normal people don't get access to megaphones like politicians and movie stars, etc. So collective voicing is their best way to amplify their opinions. 

But I'm glad that you see SOME benefit. Agree with you/Dave that "fuck Trump" signs aren't really useful. Carry a sign that says what you want.
