Kannada Phrase of the Day – 9

Dear All,

Good evening. This is in continuation of the question series that we
have been looking at in the past few days. I am adding one more to the
words that can be used to convey questions in Kannada. The current
list is below. The additions and their
examples follow.

yelli: where
yellige: where to
yaava: which, yaavudu: which one
yaavaga: when
yeenu: what
yaake: why
yellinda: where from
yellige: where to

heege (rhymes with regea): How?

Example 1:
Question: manushya jagattige heege bandanu? How did Man come to the
world?

manushya (manu-Sh-ya): man (human).
gaNDu: male. heNNu: female.
gaNDasu: man, gaNDasaru: men (plural).
heNgasu: woman, heNgasaru: women (plural).

jagattige: (jagattu: world + ge: to)
jaaga: place
viSva: universe

heege: how

bandanu: (he) came.
bandaLu: (she) came. (words in brackets denote implicit addressing)
bandaru: they came (plural)

Answer: manushya maNganinda bandanu. Man came from the Monkey.

manushya: man/Human
maNga: Monkey. kOthi: Monkey.
bandanu: (he came).

Note: manushya is generally used to refer to 'Human'. Hence you will
not find its female gender. However, it can be used to refer to Men.
Example:
Q: aa mansuhya heege? How is that man?

A: aa manushya swalpa aaseburuka. "That man is a little greedy".

aa manushya: that man
swalpa: a little.
aaseburuka: greedy.

PS: By the way, evolution is called 'vikasana'. When it refers to
biological evolution, it is called 'jeeva vikasana'.
