Kannada Phrase of the Day - 4
Dear all,
I had given a sentence for translation yesterday.
"naale cook ge raaje. naanu uuTakke baralla. hindina vaara hoda hotel nalli tintiini."
Here is the translation in English.
"The cook is on leave tomorrow. I shall not come for lunch/meal. I shall eat at the hotel where I had food last week."

Here is the phrase of the day:
Example 1:
Ivattu tumba/bahaLa bisilu ide. raatri maLe barabahudu.
tumba: very much
bahaLa (La as in bengaLuru): very much
bisilu: sunny/bright/hot.
raatri: raa-thri (night
maLe (Le as in bengaLuru): rain
barabahudu: may come
We had introduced the word 'swalpa' (less) previously. tumba/bahaLa can be used as its antonym. However, they can also be used as a superlative for swalpa also.
Example 2:
"ii sala maLe bahaLa swalpa/kaDime. namma kaDe tumba kashTa aagatte"
This time, the rain is very less. We shall have lots of difficulties in our area.
ii sala: this time, (ii: this, sala: time). Remember modala dina, hindina dina we had used... sala can also be used in that context.
Example: ii sala (this time), hindina sala (last time), mundina sala (next time).
maLe: rain.
swalpa/kaDime: less.
namma kaDe: our region/area (namma: our, )
kaDe (like Khoday's): side)
kashTa (ka-sh-Ta (like Tata)): difficult/difficulty.
aagatte: shall happen (future tense)
Example 3:
namma kaDe sikkapaTTe gaaLi. nimmalli barii mooDana? It was too windy in our region. Was it just clouds in yours?
namma kaDe: our region/area
sikkapaTTe (sikkaa-pa-TTe): a synonym of bahaLa/tumba
gaaLi (Li as in bengaLuuru): wind.
niivu: you (plural),
nimma (your).
alli: there.
nimmalli: yours.
nimmalli may mean "your place" or with you.
nimmalli, nimma hatthira, nimma kaDe (hatthira: near) all mean the same but their usage depends on the location.
nimma hattira is generally used in Bengaluru and neighboring areas.
nimma kaDe is used in North Karnataka.
nimmalli is generally used in Coastal Karnataka.
barii (as is saa-ree): just.
mooDa (mO-Da, as in mode): cloud.
mooDanaa (naa adds the question).
Similarly, you can use hooganaa? (shall we go). tinnana (shall we eat) etc.
Example 4:
hotel hattiradalli ide. naDedare, barii ippattu nimishagaLu.
allige hooganaa?
hattiradalli: nearby. hattira: near. allli: there.
naDedare: if we walk. naDe (na-D-e): "to walk", naDedare: if we walk.
kuutare: if we sit (kuuru: to sit), hoodare: if we go (hoogu: to go).
bari: just
ippattu: 20
nimishagaLu: minutes.
nimisha: minute.
gaLu (as in bengaLuru) adds plural form.
allige: to there.
alli: there.
ge: to
hooganaa: shall we go?
Exercise for today: Try to use a combination of the words you have
learnt so far to translate the following sentences to Kannada:
1. It was cloudy yesterday. It should rain heavily daily.
2. I have to walk 1/2 KM today. The Autos won't come to our area.
3. They are coming to our house today. Shall we go to the cinema next week?
