Kannada Phrase of the Day – 5

Dear All,

Yesterday's Kannada translation exercise:

1. It was cloudy yesterday. It should rain heavily daily.
ninne mooDa itthu. dinaa/prati dina tumba/jasti/bahaLa maLe barabeku.

2. I have to walk 1/2 KM today. The Autos won't come to our area.
ivattu naanu 1/2 KM naDeyabeku. AutogaLu namma kaDe baralla.

3. They are coming to our house today. Shall we go to the cinema next
week?
avaru namma manege ivattu bartaare. naavu mundina vaara cinema ge
hooganaa?


A couple of people have asked me whether to use "barteera" instead of
"banni" or 'tarteera' instead of 'tanni'. We can interchangeably use
these verbs only in specific contexts like asking someone to bring an
auto: Auto tanni/tarteera.
However, "Auto tanni" means "please bring an Auto" while "Auto
tartheera" means "will you bring an Auto" which is a question. Hence,
there is a slight difference in the usage in different contexts.

Here is the phrase of the day

Example 1
Bega Auto hatthi Amma.:
Madam, climb/get into the Auto fast.

Bega (b-E-ga): fast
hatthi (plural): hatthu: to climb.
Amma: mother. In Kannada, Amma is used to address a woman
respectfully.
Sometimes, just a 'ma' might be used. Example: koothkoLi ma (please
sit
ma'am)
Similarly, Akka (elder sister) is also used.
For men, Anna (elder brother) is often used to address someone
respectfully. Appa (father) is less rarely used to address elders, but
is frequently used for younger people.

Example2
"ille banni Anna, kaDime beleyalli (cheap rate alli) kodana. Raju,
hosa maalu torisappa" - Sir, come here itself. Let us give it at less
price.
Raju, show the new items.

illee (il-lE, lE as in late): Here itself. illi means here. Stressing
the 'e' gives the effect of 'itself'. Similarly, 'allee' means there
itself.
Anna: elder brother/sir
kadime (ka-Di-me): less
beleyalli (bele + alli). bele: rate. beleyalli: at this rate.
kooDana (ko-Da-Na): let us give.
hosa: new (antonym: haLe: old).
maalu: item/good
toorisu (torisu): "show" torisu+appa = torisappa/torsappa.


Words to express common relations:
Amma/avva: mother, Akka: elder sister, tangi: younger sister
Appa/ayya: father. anna: elder brother/father. tamma: younger brother.
Ajja/taata: grand father.
ajji: grand mother
maga: son
magaLu: daughter
makkaLu: children

Other useful verbs:
hattu: climb up. plural: hatti. hattu also means 'ten' in Kannada.
hatti also means 'cotton'.
iLi (i as in insect-Li) : climb down.
haaru: jump
kooru: sit
yeeLu (yee as in ape-Lu): get up
heeLu (hee as in ape-Lu): tell
keeLu (kee as in Kate Winslet-Lu): listen


Example 3:
kooti mara hattide - he monkey has climbed the tree.

hattide: 'has climbed"
hatthutta ide: "is climbing"
hatthatte: "will climb"

Similarly,
iLidide: 'has got down'
iLita ide: 'is getting down'
iLiyatte: will get down

haaride: 'has flown'
haari hogide: 'has flown away'.
haartaa ide: 'is flying'
haaratte 'will fly'

Exercise for the day:
Use the verbs that were introduced today in small sentences,
preferably
in different tenses and with singular/plural nouns. More examples/
clues
can be found in previous emails.

Try for example:

'She has climbed the bus'.
They listen to a lot of music.
Her son came here last month.
Get down from the auto now itself!
