Kannada Phrase of the Day – 6

Good evening.

Yesterday's Kannada translation exercise:

1. 'She has climbed the bus'.
avaLu (singular) bus hatthiddaaLe.

2. They listen to a lot of music / They listen to music a lot avaru
tumba sangeetha eeLtaare / avaru sangiitha tumba keeLtaare

3. Her son came here last month.
avaLa(singular)/avara (plural) maga illige hooda tingaLu banda.

4. Get down from the auto now itself!
iigalee auto inda iLiyiri / iLiiri / iLiyappa / iLiyanna / iLiyamma...

Today, I will introduce a few simple questions. Please try to frame
simple day to day questions in Kannada based on the following
examples.

Example 1:

niivu yellige hoogta idiira ? : where are you going?

niivu: you
ellige (elli-ge): where to
hoogta (hOg-tha) idiira: going

Similarly, you can ask with a little variation:

Example 2:

niivu mane ge hoogtiira? will you go home?

mane ge: to home
hoogtiira (hOg-theera): will you go?

usage:
hoogtaa idiira: are you going (plural)
hoogtaa idiiya: are you going (singular)

hoogtiira: will you go? (plural)
hoogtiiya: will you go? (singular)

You may remember alli (there) and illi (here). elli means 'where'.

Similarly,

Example 3:
nanna pustaka elli ide? where is my book?

pustaka: book

Answer: ninna pustaka allee table hattira ide: your book is there
itself, near the table.

nanna: my
ninna: your
alli: there. allee: there itself
hattira ide: it is near (the antonym of hattira is duura: far)

other simple questions using yelli (where):

Example 3:
ii bus yellige hoogatte? Where will this bus go?

Example 4:
avaru yellinda bandiddu / bandidaare / bandaru? where did they/(he/she
with
respect) come from?

avaru: he/she with respect or they
yellinda: yelli + inda: where from

bandiddu, bandidaare, bandaru: have come. bandaru also means port in
Kannada.

Other questions:
ii bus yaava kaDe hoogatte? Which side/region will this bus go?

yaava: which. similarly,
yaavaga: when. ivaaga: now. avaaga: then
yaavudu: which one.
yeenu: what


Example 5:
idu yaava jaati mara?
idu: this
yaava: which
jaati: caste (commonly in the context of plants and trees, jaati
refers to type/species)
mara: tree. giDa: plant. praaNi: animal. pakshi: bird. huLa/keeTa:
insect

Example 6:
niivu huTTiddu yaava varsha? which year were you born?
niivu: you (plural)
huTTiddu: (huTTu (birth)+ iddu): were born
yaava: which
varsha: year

An alternate way of asking the same question:
niivu huTTida varsha yaavudu?

Example 7:
railu yaavaga baratte? when will the train (rail) come?
train ivaaga baratte. (train will come now)
