Kannada Phrase of the Day Questions and Answers

I received a few emails asking for more information on a few topics.

2. When we 'respect'fully address people, shouldn't we add 'rii',
like 'kooDrii', 'maaDrii' etc?

'rii' in colloquial usage in Kannada is in general used to address
people with respect. However, the amount of respect shown depends on
your tone in pronouncing the 'ri'.
Hence, at the initial stage, it is better to not use 'ri' and address
people. Here are two contrasting examples of how 'ri' is used.

For example,
a. wife saying to the husband: 'riii', ivattu office inda beega
ban'ri'/banni. ("rii, please come back from the office soon")
rii: Addressing the husband, ivattu: today, inda: from, beega:
soon/fast, banni/ban'rii': come (pronounced as bun-ni/bun-rii)

PS: By the way, here the wife is polite :). If she is angry, she might
use the tone below.

b. when you are sitting in a private bus and scolding the driver for
not starting: 'ree driver', beega horDri (hor-D-ri). (Driver, leave
soon!)
beega: soon/fast, horaDu: leave.
