Python suggested changes for PyPi support

A user has suggested making some changes to add support for "PyPi" in this pull request.

If anyone is using the Python scripts in the distribution, can they comment whether this works for them or not before I allow it? If nobody objects or if I don't hear back from anyone I'll do these changes by the end of this week.
