 Dear Friends,

I am extremely proud and happy that DRDO has achieved the successful launch of Agni V missile with range of 5000 km and  Inter-continental missile [ICBM] category...as a major weapon to strike China and other countries.

The next step would be to develop a 12000 Km range missile, as China is trying to build one and not succeeded so far.
In another front, India may develop Multiple reentry missiles with capability for several nuclear warheads ,called MIRV. China must be attempting the same.

It is also important that India should develop alternative launch sites besides the Odissha coast Wheeler island ---Gopalpur site...we need more sites for testing and launching...
I had a small role in earlier ones such as Agni 2 and Agni 3, with range of 1500 to 3000 kms--- which were important stages in development. I remember how the team headed by Dr A P J Abdul Kalam used to discuss the "possibility of developing Agni missile with a capability of 5000 km"... Sometime in 1993/1994....it seemed remote  at that time  because we had lot of technical difficulties with 'Chota" missiles of Agni 2 & Agni 3.
[One of the major technical development for these missiles is the Laser Gyros for control and guidance.]
[Unfortunately Dr Kalam's name is not mentioned in the recent news reports of Agni V , since he alone developed basic design and inspired   V K Saraswat and others at Hyderabad [DRDL lab]. The previous head Shri M Natarajan had only official role in this development because he is a army tank engineer and had very little technical role in this Agni Work.]
The organizational structure of DRDO which enabled the development of Agni should be appreciated ----this structure was built by Dr Kalam
since early 1985/1986. The Delhi , DRDO head quarters personnel also deserved credit as they are a bunch of good technocrats and bureaucrats who help these projects in so many ways---as I am personally aware of---unlike other government departments. They are good at the logistic support with the help of our three services--Army, Navy and Air Force---in spite of petty politics that are always prevalent in the corridors of power in Delhi---be it DRDO or South Block.

We should also appreciate the defence ministers who supported Dr Kalam and gave a free hand----especially since earlier times--- K C Pant, PVN [Narasimha Rao],George Fernandes, Mulayam Singh Yadav among others.

Regarding the international relations, this success [of Agni V] will also change our other relationships---the US will look to India for greater strategic role in this region, vis a vis, China, North Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan among other countries.. the economic cooperation with China also will be increased as China would be keen on pursuing a greater trade relation with India and less interest in local military adventures.
At the same time there is no place for complacency from Indian scientists or defense personnel.
A time may come when India would test underground nuclear tests [100 kT] and so on , just incase....

Jai Hind
