Abstract:

Culture is essentially spiritual in nature while its counterpart,
civilization tends to be more materialistic. Therefore poetry, a natural
medium of spiritual expression in a beautiful way is more useful to
understand the culture of any country. And to which Indian culture is no
exception. Though we have many Indian languages and a stock of rich
literature in them, Sanskrit stands out in an exceptionally profound
manner for, its literature is produced in all parts of India. This gamut
of literary production in Sanskrit is equally prolific and profound,
sensual and spiritual, sensitive and sublime and above all, vivid and
variegated. In it, the soul of India has its live breath. Whether it is
the epic tradition or the lyrical expression or even the theatrical
expansion, everything in Sanskrit is truly Indian and intensely universal.
In the process of realizing the value of culture as enshrined in the
Sanskrit poems, one can unfailingly notice the refreshingly marvellous
regional flavours but also enjoy the deep-rooted human emotions of the
world at once. The present lecture series is a modest attempt to recollect
some of the beauties of Sanskrit literature that reflect the pulsating
grandeur of Indian culture and orient us towards the realization of a
universal phenomenon.
