I must appreciate both companies for the free versions. Intended of course to lead users to purchase add-ons, pro versions, or machinery (nothing wrong with business/making money), HFE, HF free, DR, are very powerful gifts to us hobbyists.
Vegas Effects (and Vegas Image) were last updated in August of last year. Since then, the Hit Film products they are based off (the compositring part of Hit Film Pro and iMerge) have had at least 2 Full Release updates. Has anyone heard if we are ever going to see updates of the Vegas-branded versions in Vegas Post?
We don't usually get updates at the same pace as Hitfilm looking at the release history. That it was updated to coincide with the release of VP 20 under Artlist was a good sign so I'd expect a roll-up patch at some point with the fixes to date.
VEGAS Post has had 4 updates so far, each usually comes a year or so after the previous one. As far as any of us knows, those updates are still happening, so yes, more updates are likely to come. Post has never kept up day and date with the Hitfilm updates, so do not let that concern you.
Both Effects and Image have been incrementally updated between full Post upgrades. Effects was updated 5 times in 2020, for example, with each update being within a month of the corresponding Hit Films Pro upgrade.
Things slowed down slightly in 2021; there were fewer Hit Film Pro updates, so that is understandable, and also Effects seemed to skip any update based on HitFilm Pro 2016, preferring to wait for 2021.1. Nevertheless there were still three updates in total in 2021, each clearly shadowing a corresponding Hit Film pro update albeit with a longer delay from the Hit Film release than previously.
Yes, initially, each Hitfilm build was accompanied by a corresponding VEGAS Effects. A few times FXhome even pre-releaseded the corresponding VEGAS Effects before Hitfilm was released. (VEGAS Effects 3.0 & Hitfilm Pro 2021.2)
I'm not hearing anything behind the scenes that would indicate that the Post suite is in any kind of danger, and even if it were, I wouldn't see team VEGAS just leaving it to die, as it has become a very valuable part of the VEGAS ecosystem. What it has enabled me to do in VEGAS has ALMOST enabled me to completely cancel my Adobe subscriptions, with me only hanging on to Lightroom to do my timelapse work, and Photoshop simply because I'm more familiar with it than VEGAS Image (though I'm starting to like VI's non-destructive workflow more and more as I learn it!) and can get the job done faster in it as a result... Not to mention it comes with the lightroom subscription that I do still need. Post should be here to stay, and I'm hoping Hitfilm will be as well, as it is excellent software.
I am following this thread because the concerns on my next Vegas update would possibly be to Post. With the demise of the Hitfilm user forum, Ignite Pro being discontinued (after many promises on it becoming bigger and better in the next release), and the exit of a lot of visible key people who were a part of Hitfilm in doing tutorials, etc., has had me wonder, what the future will be.
As of an email from FXHome customer services today, FXHome maintain that Effects and Image are still being developed, but have no idea (or cannot say) when anything might be released to customers, despite it being 10 months since we last saw any update ...
So, hurrah, a roll up of all the incremental feature additions and bug fixes , bringing Image and Effects into parity with current Hitfilm version is now available! But such a shame to see that the only way to get any of that is to upgrade to Vegas Post 21*. I'd suggest that my 'vague unease' was well founded.
*just to be clear here, I think Vegas 21 is looking really good. The Z-depth feature and inclusion of a built-in version of Mocha are both great, for example. It's just that I feel that as a Post owner I've been somewhat shortchanged.
SketchUp Web is web-browser-based and comes in a few forms (Free - which is no-cost for hobby-use; Shop - which is subscription-based and OK for commercial use; and School - which is for education settings).
Thanks for the clarifications guys, much appreciated. Ok, no worries about the commercial use limit because my 3D skills are currently at level where there is a less than 0% chance of anybody hiring me.
The problem is with the STL file format. It is meant for 3D printing so textures are kind of irrelevant for it. Collada (.DAE) is the only export format for the free versions that carries material information.
As way of feedback to anyone working in the 3D industry, the single biggest obstacle to me buying anything from anybody are the chronic problems I routinely have (90% of the time or more) simply moving a file from one place to another. Not doing fancy expert work or anything like that, just moving a file from point A to point B.
I have had to struggle with the alphabet soup of different 3D formats for something like 30 years already. I see no end to it. The Collada format was intended to be somewhat an universal open source solution with fewer limitations and subcategories that 3DS or OBJ that tend to break with modern large models.
