The phone is basically unusable in low brightness settings, and makes my room light up like a techno discoteque @ night if day dream is enabled, power saving is enabled and battery less than 20%, auto adjust brightness set (and its dark), or brightness set to low.

Marshmallow update starts hitting Galaxy A8

Resetting the phone may initially seem to resolve the issue (few hours or so) but after downloading security updates and running the phone over any bit of time, maybe even before restoring any apps, the problem comes back.

Since the new update/upgrade on my android (august 2016) it has done the same too. Also when my phone switches it self off weather iv stopped using it or its on sleep mode while im talking to someone the screen will not turn itself back on. Dissapointing as this phone was bought in january of this year.

Finally got this fixed. it sounds like the reason for this is that since the latest update your phone cannot decide whether to use hardware or software back light settings. I managed to make the problem go away by doing this:

Now go to Developer options >> Drawing Section or Rendering Section >> Find "Turn off hardware overlays" or "disable hardware overlays" >> This will force the phone to always use GPU for screen adjustments. no more flickering.

I've just tried this. If I turn the brightness ALL the way down, it still flickers like crazy, however, if that's the only time it'll do it, I consider that a win. I'm not gonna put my sim card back in til I give it a few days though lol. I have to pull the battery to get the sim in, and it's been touch and go as to whether I could turn the dang thing on again. Fingers crossed!

Edit: Well, that didn't last long. I held my breath and hit the power button to turn the screen off. Flicker flicker. It came back on, but I can say that at least in my case, the flicker hasn't been stopped by turning off the overlay.

In my research thus far, the AMOLED screen technology is to blame. When the display circuits get old or damaged, they don't sustain current at low power settings. In LED screens, a back light controls brightness, but AMOLED screens send current to each pixel for brightness control. If the circuit is damaged, or any corrosion has built up inside, this could attenuate the current below the point required to sustain light flow. I see this problem with some LED and CFL lights on motion sensor switches. Just enough current goes through the motion sensor to keep it's circuits active, and that current causes a flicker in the light.

With the screen though, since the problem is only resolved when you increase the brightness just a bit above minimum, it seems anything that lowers the display power (auto brightness for example) will cause it to flicker if this setting gets too low. I also noticed that before the screen locks on timer, it dims to low power for a few seconds and flickers as a result. There are apps that attempt to resolve this by putting a translucent black screen over your desktop and apps. This keeps the power up on the pixels but adds a black overlay, kind of like a screen filter. You can adjust the darkness if you need it to save your eyes when reading in the dark but it doesn't help save power any. They also require a rooted device, which could void warranties. The reason for this I believe is because apps are supposed to operate in a way they don't intrude on each other, and a filter that lays over your screen does in fact alter the output of your display rendering. With the added security concerns of these apps possibly collecting screen shots and sending them to another site, I would avoid this. Best to use a physical screen overlay you can put on or remove as needed as long as it doesn't interfere with your touch screen options.

Ultimately, these devices were meant for replacement every 2 to 3 years so if you're like me and you like to make your investment last, best thing to do is apply any work around you can come up with. A repair shop may be able to wipe the circuit boards down with a solution that clears away corrosion, but it won't repair any weakened pixels. I'm still using a Samsung S4 and only now that I have verified it won't upgrade to the Android 6.0 OS am I considering replacing it within the next year or so.

thats because of the new update of the android version as i had recently updated my samsung galaxy s5 to marshmallow this started all because i think the phone is not able to undestand the display settings whether to choose the cpu or gpu to display the screen its just we have to wait for a next update or just just jump back to an older android version and the people who say that to purchase a new phone than its useless using samsung mobiles where for a silly bug we have to upgrade for a whole new mobile phone simply useless this will take down the samsung market that means

That's really ignorant to think Samsung would purposely build in a bug to force you to buy a phone every couple years. They may make manufacturing changes that impact the longevity of their products to cut costs, but intentional bugs are absurd. You obviously don't build or produce anything or else you know that's business suicide.

In the marketing world of mobile phones its not Absurd to think they wouldnt try to purposely out bugs in a system to get peopkw to purchase an uograde. You must not kniw anything about marketing and how some people like you are ignorant enough not to kbiw this goes on..lol They try and if someone calls to repair the issue the ALWAYS try to get you to do an uograde to a new device ..otherwise they do the "factory reset bullshit to fix it....period!

I have a Galaxy S5, I tried turning off hardware rendering, didn't work. Removed auto as a brightness option, didn't work. I rebooted my phone, turned auto brightness off and turned off hardware rendering, problem solved; at least for now.

For those who use dimmer/ filter apps to workaround the problem, remember that one day you won't be able to use your phone, the screen will finally gets black a lot ( will be painful to turn it on after many many tries )

Just consider buying a new phone in the short term ( if you don't take care of your devices and you make them fall on the ground and stuff like this, just don't buy an AMOLED screen phone, look for something else, go away from SAMSUNG )

I had the same problem flickering yellow screen and screen blackout requiring removal of battery to restart. I tried many of above solutions with some improvement, but none permanent.. it kept happening! Then my phone did some software updates on its own, the problem was completely fixed and phone back to normal! Yay!

I had the same issue with my Samsung S5 phone, and it turned out that the Micro SD card was the problem. I too had given up, and started looking for a replacement. I decided to copy the contents of the Micro SD card so that I could transfer the data to the new phone. When I removed the card, I noticed that the phone was functioning normally. I also received an error message when I inserted the SD card into my computer, that the SD card had errors that needed fixed. I fixed the errors, copied the files to the hard drive on my computer, and then re-formatted the SD card, and my phone is like new. The screen no longer flickers. This appears to be a fairly common problem with the Samsung phones that use Micro SD cards. My first suggestion is to remove the card if you have one, since it may be the cause of your flickering screen.

Turn off your Samsung Galaxy J7 completely. Then you have to press the following keys to turn the phone on again: " Power On/ Off "," Volume + " "Home" button . If the Samsung Galaxy J7 vibrates once, release the power on/ off button but keep the other two keys from the key combination pressed until a small menu appears on the screen. Now mark the entry "Wipe cache partition" with the volume down key. With the power on / off button the entry can be selected selected and the process gets started. This usually takes only a few seconds. Then the previously displayed menu appears again. Now select the first entry with "Reboot system now" and run the command again with a press of the power button. Your Samsung Galaxy J7 will now reboot. That's it. The reboot can now might take a few seconds longer. After that no more errors such as overheating, black or flickering screen or battery drain should occur with you phone

I rebooted into recovery mode, and wiped the cache and the 'dalvik' cache. I have TWRP as my recovery, which gave me these options. I'm not sure if wiping the dalvik cache is necessary, and if perhaps it is included in the cache wipe process built into the stock Samsung recovery image.

I removed my SD card (as per other suggestions, considering the removal would allow greater power flow to the screen) before doing this. I don't think it had an effect on the process, but I should mention it anyway in case it did.

I had this issue about two weeks after replacing a broken screen myself. I tried all the software solutions, but none worked for me (not allowing the screen to go dim did, but I didn't like that solution). The screen would also not turn on when pressing the power button. The issue with mine was the digitizer was not fully secured to the phone. If I pressed the top of the screen down (around the speaker and/or light sensor areas), the flickering would stop and the screen would turn on fine. I didn't use tape to replace my screen, but just let the residual glue hold it, which apparently was not enough. Also, I noticed the former screen popped right off without using any heat. It seems the hot summers and normal use wore the factory glue down to almost nothing. If the software fixes don't work for you, consider worn out glue and a digitizer separating from the phone as the issue.

I too had a broken screen. it's been 3-4 weeks since I've fixed it. and yes that upper part is a little up. I too tried to turn off hardware overlays. Turn off power saving mode that auto brightness but none of them worked. When I open my keyboard to type, the letters are automatically being filled like they are being pressed and without touching anything screen is being selected, apps are being open seriously, this is scary though. so help me guys please.
